Overview Barnes‑Jewish Hospital at Washington University Medical Center is the largest hospital in Missouri and is ranked as one of the nation's top hospitals by U.S. News & World Report. Its staff is composed of full‑time academic faculty and community physicians of Washington University School of Medicine, supported by house staff of residents, interns, fellows, and other medical professionals. Acute Care Medicine has patients with a full range of clinical issues—from significant blood dyscrasias, advanced endocrine pathology, heart and renal failure, GI conditions, infectious diseases, asthma, and many other conditions. Due to patient acuity on this nursing division, we provide advanced training to bring new nurses to the highest level of functioning. Each unit is led by a clinical manager and lead charge nurse. The unit is supported by an advanced practice nurse, and each unit has a case manager, social worker, physical therapist, dietitian, and pharmacist. This multidisciplinary team works with physicians, nurses, and patient care technicians to provide quality patient care. Role Purpose Provides direct patient care activities including assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation within the guidelines of the standards of nursing care. Responsibilities Promotes patient and family‑centered care in a healing environment. Educates patients and families on managing illness or injury, including post‑treatment home care and medication administration. Participates in activities that promote patient safety, quality, and regulatory compliance. Engages in professional development. Develops, implements, and documents individual plans of care with defined goals in collaboration with interprofessional team members, patients, families, or caregivers, following established guidelines and standards of nursing care; proactively plans and ensures communication of care plans across the continuum. Uses critical nursing skills to assess and evaluate physical, psychosocial, and emotional needs according to standards of care; assesses patient preferences and barriers to involvement, including values, emotional, spiritual, cultural, and population‑specific needs. Recognized as a safety‑sensitive position; must maintain constant alertness and work safely.
