Water Supply SCADA Operator (Reservoir Control)

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) protects public health by providing high quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the United States, with nearly 6,000 employees. The Bureau of Water Supply seeks to hire two Watershed Maintainers located in Grahamsville, New York. Under the supervision of the Supervisor of the Water Supply Control Center (WSCC), Watershed Maintainers will serve as Water Supply Control Center Operators, monitoring the SCADA system and related tools to manage the operation of water supply reservoirs and facilities. Responsibilities Respond to alarms, make adjustments to alarm points, and monitor reservoir stream releases and water supply diversions as well as target flows. Read meters and gauges and perform valve changes as directed. Complete and maintain all necessary paperwork, including logbooks and flow records. Notify supervisory staff of negative issues. Perform general custodial duties within the Water Supply Control room. Monitor the reservoir system, aqueduct network, seven wastewater treatment plants, and administrative facilities. Assist the WSCC Supervisor in daily activities and support the water supply system operations. Maintain situational awareness and operational oversight for the WSCC during shifts; support other operators after hours as needed. Utilize SCADA and other tools to monitor and manage the operation of water supply reservoirs and related facilities. License Requirement A valid Motor Vehicle Driver License in the State of New York, maintained for the duration of employment. Physical Activities and Conditions Work may involve lifting objects up to waist height, using hand tools, pushing and pulling objects, reaching at arm’s length, and balancing on stools or ladders from 3 to 30 feet. Protective equipment such as gloves, boots, goggles, earplugs, noise attenuators, and face shields may be required. Work may occur in temperatures ranging from 0°F to 105°F, in wet conditions, and in the presence of toxic or corrosive chemicals. Minimum Qualifications A four‑year high school diploma or equivalent. One year of full‑time satisfactory experience in operating and maintaining equipment used in controlling or purifying water at facilities in watershed areas, reservoirs, or aqueduct systems OR performing duties involving upkeep, inspection, maintenance, or operation of watershed areas and related facilities. OR Two years of full‑time satisfactory experience as a mechanic, journeyman or helper in the electrical or mechanical trades, or a technician in a chemical processing facility or laboratory.
