Position and Salary
The Attorney General's Office is recruiting for a permanent full time Paralegal 2 in the Children, Youth, and Families Division. This position is located in Olympia, Washington, and is represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE). Note: there is the possibility of an in-training from the Paralegal 1 level.
Paralegal 2 Salary Range (55): $61,644 - $82,872 annually (7/1/2025) | $62,880 - $84,528 (Effective 7/1/2026)
Paralegal 1 Salary Range (51): $55,836 - $75,108 annually (7/1/2025) | $56,952 - $76,608 (Effective 7/1/2026)

The base pay offered will take into account internal equity and may vary depending on the preferred candidate's job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

About the Children, Youth, and Families Division

The Children, Youth, and Families Division (CYF) is comprised of 34 attorneys and 32 professional staff who together provide legal advice and representation to the Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF). Staff in each Attorney General's Office location handle litigation for DCYF, and the CYF Division has the responsibility for doing so locally, as well as coordinating this work for the AGO statewide and advising DCYF leadership.
Duties and Essential Functions of a Paralegal 2

This position works within a highly collaborative team environment in the Program Advice Litigation (PAL) section, supporting the mission of the Attorney General's Office and the division's client agency, the Department of Children, Youth, and Families.


This paralegal provides legal support to our Juvenile Rehabilitation team, collaborating and coordinating to complete all required discovery. Under the direct supervision of the Paralegal 3 Supervisor, the duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Prepare answers and objections to interrogatories, requests for production, and responses to the same, and review answers to discovery for completeness, evasiveness, and propriety of objections.
  • Collaborate with the AAGs in developing legal strategy, and analyzing, selecting, and summarizing documents to identify information relevant to factual or legal issues.
  • Understand the components of electronic discovery.
  • Manage, organize, track, and produce electronic discovery in Everlaw in response to requests for production by uploading, reviewing, and coding client documents. Interpret the discovery requests to have a clear understanding of the request and independently determine privilege and responsiveness.
  • Develop and maintain tracking logs for the identification and receipt of documents and actions taken.
  • Independently draft legal documents and conduct complex legal research.
  • Attend litigation and client meetings, coordinate with clients to schedule meetings, and, when requested, take notes to assist in preserving next steps in litigation.
  • Trial and mediation/settlement preparation to include preparing witness and exhibit lists, preparing contracts, and routing invoices for payment.

In-Training Defined

An in-training is on-the-job instruction designed for candidates with less experience than the required goal classification to learn and grow into a higher-level role. In this job posting, we are open to considering those eligible at the Paralegal 1 level who are interested in learning on-the-job with the goal of moving into the Paralegal 2 role. You'll gain the competencies and skills needed to successfully perform your duties while being supported by your supervisor, manager, and coworkers. Upon successful completion of your training and demonstrating knowledge of the position requirements, you will be promoted into the Paralegal 2 level.

To qualify at the Paralegal 1 level

Combination of three years of experience* through:
  • Paralegal certification
  • Two-year paralegal degree
  • Paralegal plus (or nine-month paralegal, post BA) certification,
and/or
  • Paraprofessional experience in support of an attorney
To qualify at the Paralegal 2 level

Combination of four years of experience* through:
  • Paralegal certification
  • Two-year paralegal degree
  • Paralegal plus (or nine-month paralegal, post BA) certification,
and/or
  • Paraprofessional experience in support of an attorney
OR
  • One year experience as a Paralegal 1 in Washington State Service.
*You may have gained applicable paraprofessional experience through previous Paralegal or Legal Assistant work.

Examples of paraprofessional experience in support of an attorney:
  • Preparing legal pleadings and legal correspondence
  • Ensuring and verifying timely and proper service of legal documents
  • Calculating, verifying, and calendaring critical events and other dates
  • Managing case documents, files and exhibits
  • Tracking and organizing discovery documents
  • Researching legal issues and verifying legal citations and references for accuracy

Insurance Benefits
Employees and their families are covered by medical (including vision), dental and basic life insurance. There are multiple medical plans with affordable monthly premiums that offer coverage throughout the state.

Staff are eligible to enroll each year in a medical flexible spending account which enables them to use tax-deferred dollars toward their health care expenses. Employees are also covered by basic life and long-term disability insurance, with the option to purchase additional coverage amounts.

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
State Employees are members of the Washington Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). New employees have the option of two employer contributed retirement programs. For additional information, check out the Department of Retirement Systems' web site.

Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP). This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.

Social Security
All state employees are covered by the federal Social Security and Medicare systems. The state and the employee pay an equal amount into the system.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness
If you are employed by a government or not-for-profit organization, and meet the qualifying criteria, you may be eligible to receive student loan forgiveness under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.

Holidays
Full-time and part-time employees are entitled to paid holidays and one paid personal holiday per calendar year.

Note: Employees who are members of certain Unions may be entitled to additional personal leave day(s), please refer to position specific Collective Bargaining Agreements for more information.

Full-time employees who work full monthly schedules qualify for holiday compensation if they are employed before the holiday and are in pay status for at least 80 nonovertime hours during the month of the holiday; or for the entire work shift preceding the holiday.


Part-time employees who are in pay status during the month of the holiday qualify for the holiday on a pro-rata basis. Compensation for holidays (including personal holiday) will be proportionate to the number of hours in pay status in the month to that required for full-time employment, excluding all holiday hours. Pay status includes hours worked and time on paid leave.

Sick Leave
Full-time employees earn eight hours of sick leave per month. Overtime eligible employees who are in pay status for less than 80 hours per month, earn a monthly proportionate to the number of hours in pay status, in the month to that required for full-time employment. Overtime exempt employees who are in pay status for less than 80 hours per month do not earn a monthly accrual of sick leave.


Sick leave accruals for part-time employees will be proportionate to the number of hours in pay status, in the month to that required for full-time employment. Pay status includes hours worked, time on paid leave and paid holiday.

Vacation (Annual Leave)
Full-time employees accrue vacation leave at the rates specified in (1) or the applicable collective bargaining agreement (CBA). Full-time employees who are in pay status for less than 80 nonovertime hours in a month do not earn a monthly accrual of vacation leave.

Part-time employees accrue vacation leave hours in accordance with (1) or the applicable collective bargaining agreement (CBA) on a pro rata basis. Vacation leave accrual will be proportionate to the number of hours in pay status, in the month to that required for full-time employment.

Pay status includes hours worked, time on paid leave and paid holiday.

As provided in , an employer may authorize a lump-sum accrual of vacation leave or accelerate the vacation leave accrual rate to support the recruitment and/or retention of a candidate or employee for a Washington Management Service position. Vacation leave accrual rates may only be accelerated using the rates established WAC 357-31-165.


Note: Most agencies follow the civil service rules covering leave and holidays for exempt employees even though there is no requirement for them to do so. However, agencies are required to adhere to the applicable RCWs pertaining holidays and leave.

Military Leave
Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year.

Bereavement Leave
Most employees whose family member or household member dies, or for loss of pregnancy, are entitled to five (5) days of paid bereavement leave. In addition, the employer may approve other available leave types for the purpose of bereavement leave.
