Job Description Summary The surgical technologist prepares the surgical set‑up for procedures; observes and anticipates the needs of the surgeon during the procedure; functions within a sterile field; functions as a surgical assistant. Facility Overview Our facility boasts nine fully equipped operating rooms, including two dedicated to da Vinci XI robotic surgeries and an Mako orthopedic robot for total joint surgeries. We support a wide variety of surgical specialties such as ENT, Gynecology (GYN), Ophthalmology, General Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Cystoscopy (Cysto), Podiatry, and a dedicated Endovascular Surgery Suite. Scheduled Weekly Hours 40 hours (5×8 hrs. or 4×10 hrs.). Will consider 36 hours (3×12) also. Call Shift This position has call requirements and is subject to staffing needs. Position Information Entity: Medical University Hospital Authority (MUHA) Worker Type: Employee Worker Sub‑Type: Regular Cost Center: CC004759 ORBG - Operating Room Pay Rate Type: Hourly Pay Grade: Health-26 Essential Functions Drapes patients for surgical procedures and assists the surgical team during operative procedure. Cleans and prepares rooms between procedures and after terminal cleaning. Maintains and cares for equipment supplies. Documents maintenance and repairs and troubleshoots equipment needs when necessary. Performs assisting duties within the scope of a practicing CST Level II. Performs other duties as assigned. Physical Requirements Stand for periods up to twelve hours; walk, sit, use hands, reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, talk, hear and smell. Lifts 50 pounds 50% of the time and up to 100 pounds 50% of the time when moving anesthetized patients. Has fine manual dexterity skills to assist with operative procedures. Needs close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), peripheral vision, depth perception, distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet away) and ability to adjust focus. Mental Requirements Can read and interpret business or safety manuals, clinical or technical procedures or regulations. Can write reports, correspondence or manuals. Can effectively present information and respond to questions from groups, patients, families, other employees and medical staff. Can perform basic math functions (add, subtract, multiply, divide). Can understand verbal communication. Can define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Can deal with concrete and abstract concepts and interpret verbal, non‑verbal and written instructions. Population Served Primarily interacts with all age groups, genders and ethnicities, providing direct patient care. All staff members must demonstrate knowledge and skill necessary to meet the physical, psycho/social, educational, safety, cultural and related needs of the persons in the assigned work area. Minimum Qualifications Graduation from an accredited surgical technology program or a surgical technology military program and a minimum of one year of work experience as a Certified Surgical Technologist. Level II practitioner demonstrates higher level of critical thinking and problem‑solving skills and has met Level I criteria. Credentialed as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (formerly LCC‑ST) and must be maintained. Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required. Physical and Mental Requirements (Additional) Ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, walking, climbing stairs, working indoors and outside in temperature extremes, from elevated areas, in confined/cramped spaces, kneeling, bending, twisting, squatting, pinching, gross and fine manipulation, reaching overhead, repetitive motions, using both legs, balancing, and lifting up to 50 lb. unassisted. Maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or both; see and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance; discriminate between colors; determine distance/relationship between objects; have good peripheral vision; maintain hearing acuity, with correction. Deal effectively with stressful situations; work rotating shifts, overtime, latex‑safe environment, maintain tactile and olfactory sensory functions as required; qualified for respirator use as required.
