The Art Therapist's primary objective is to provide individual and group therapy to adults with mental illness, trauma and substance use disorders while supporting individuals and their families. This professional collaborates with psychiatric and allied team members in assessment, diagnosing, treatment planning and intervention.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but may not be limited to the following:
- Reports on time as scheduled at the assigned work location.
- Develops, markets, implements and maintains therapy groups based on clinical needs and person-centered planning principles.
- Facilitates group and individual interventions incorporating process oriented, didactic, supportive and educationally focused art therapy.
- Consistently completes comprehensive assessments, individualized plans of service, discharge summaries, and all related documentation within required timeframes while maintaining high-quality standards.
- Utilizes the creative process, pieces of art created in therapy, and third-party artwork to assist clients to develop self-awareness, explore emotions, address unresolved emotional conflicts, improve social skills, and raise self-esteem.
- Facilitate recovery interventions by incorporating techniques through a variety of art mediums.
- Facilitate the expression of feelings through creative work rather than speech.
- Knowledge of diverse interventions (e.g., individual, family, group, co-occurring, evidence-based practices) and can apply them effectively in therapy sessions.
- Ability to document for co-occurring individuals including staging and stage-matched interventions.
- Knowledge of recovery philosophy with demonstrated ability to educate individuals on signs, symptoms and treatment of mental illness and substance use.
- Demonstrated ability to instill hope.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed care principles.
- Prioritizes trauma sensitivity in service provision.
- Provides group therapy sessions aligned with medical necessity and agency standards.
- Conducts individual, family, and/or group therapy and crisis intervention.
- Knowledge of mental illness, trauma and addiction with the ability to educate clients to gain insight into illness.
- Maintains 85 monthly direct service hours.
- Maintains an individual therapy caseload of 24 clients.
- Consults with other team members when needed and integrate their input as appropriate.
- Demonstrates professional and ethical behavior.
- Demonstrate proficiency in his or her professional practice by participating in case conferences, in-services, and workshops, and by reading professional literature.
- Complete all documentation within 24 business hours of service delivery utilizing the current electronic health record and augmented documentation tool.
- The clinician has no substantiated recipient rights violations filed against him or her.
- Completes all other duties as assigned.
- Participates in committees and organizational activities as requested.
- Provides input into policy to improve services to clients.

The Art Therapist comprehensively assesses client needs on multi-dimensional domains (behaviors, health, education, financial security, relationships, meaningful activities, quality of life, etc.). Based on client and family needs, the therapist applies interventions to assist client with goals of recovery, and improved quality of life, decreased trauma and SUD-related triggers, cues, and distressed relationships/family dynamics.

The Art Therapist believes in the potential and resilience of all clients and seeks feedback on therapy effectiveness and satisfaction from disparity-vulnerable individuals and families. The Art Therapist demonstrates excellence in communication skills with individuals, their families and colleagues through non-judgmental inquiry, respect, empathic and active listening and reflection. - The Art Therapist manages their caseload efficiently, demonstrates strong ethical practice, provides nonjudgmental and values-based care, and collaborates with appropriate clinicians through regular case consultation.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Master's degree in social work, psychology or counseling from an accredited college or university required; ATR Certification (or in process).
- Preferred 2 years of experience in working with adults with mental illness, trauma and substance use disorders.
CREDENTIALS/LICENSURE
Licensure with the State of Michigan LLC, LPC, LLMSW, LMSW or LLP.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to develop and implement new groups that meet the needs of the consumers.
- Ability to establish professional working relationships with all staff.
- Appropriately articulates the view of the agency when networking in the community.
