Military Operations and IHL Expert for AI Training

Role Overview

Apply your military operations and international humanitarian law expertise to help train and evaluate next-generation AI systems for defense-policy and humanitarian-law scenarios. This remote contract role focuses on translating real-world operational, targeting, and conflict-ethics knowledge into responsible evaluation frameworks and training inputs. Prior AI experience is not required.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop taxonomies for military use and defense operations across diverse conflict contexts.
• Create dual-use triage frameworks that distinguish military and civilian applications of technology and knowledge.
• Define boundaries for prohibited assistance under international humanitarian law and provide structured input for AI training and evaluation.
• Design conflict-risk rubrics and scenario-based tools to assess the operational and ethical implications of defense activities.
• Evaluate and refine policy-relevant benchmarks for responsible AI testing in defense and humanitarian contexts.
• Deliver written and verbal analyses explaining complex warfighting, weapons targeting, and humanitarian-law concepts to interdisciplinary audiences.

Qualifications

• At least 5 years of relevant military, defense analysis, or international humanitarian law experience. Senior contributors will ideally have 8 to 20 years of experience.
• An advanced degree, such as an MA, LLM, or PhD, or equivalent operational experience in military science, security studies, international law, or a related field.
• Established credibility in warfighting, operational planning, targeting law, or the application of humanitarian law.
• Expertise interpreting and applying conflict ethics, international humanitarian law, and defense-policy frameworks in real-world scenarios.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical and ethical concepts clearly and concisely.
• Experience in research, policy analysis, or advisory work in military, government, legal, or think-tank settings.
• Experience with conflict analysis, war-crimes investigations, or weapons-policy development is a strong advantage.

Work Terms

• Remote contract engagement.

Compensation

• $50 to $90 per hour.
