Military Operations & IHL Expert for AI Training

Apply military operations and international humanitarian law expertise to help train and evaluate next generation AI systems for defense policy and humanitarian law scenarios. This remote contractor opportunity centers on translating real world operational, targeting, and conflict ethics knowledge into responsible evaluation frameworks. Key Responsibilities

• Develop taxonomies for military use and defense operations across varied conflict contexts.
• Create dual use triage frameworks that distinguish military and civilian applications of technology and knowledge.
• Define boundaries for prohibited assistance under international humanitarian law and provide structured input for AI training and evaluation.
• Design conflict risk rubrics and scenario based tools that assess the operational and ethical implications of defense activities.
• Evaluate and improve policy relevant benchmarks for responsible AI testing in defense and humanitarian contexts.
• Produce written and verbal analyses that explain complex warfighting, weapons targeting, and humanitarian law concepts to interdisciplinary audiences.

• At least 5 years of relevant military, defense analysis, or international humanitarian law experience. Senior contributors will ideally have 8 to 20 years of experience.
• Expertise in warfighting, weapons targeting, defense operations, and international humanitarian law.
• An advanced degree, such as an MA, LLM, or PhD, or equivalent operational experience in military science, security studies, international law, or a related field.
• A credible, established track record in warfighting, operational planning, targeting law, or humanitarian law application.
• Ability to interpret and apply conflict ethics, international humanitarian law, and defense policy frameworks in real world scenarios.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical and ethical concepts clearly and concisely.
• Experience in research, policy analysis, or advisory roles in military, government, legal, or think tank settings.
• Experience with conflict analysis, war crimes investigations, or weapons policy development is a strong advantage.

• Remote independent contractor engagement.
• No prior AI experience is required. Domain expertise is the central qualification.

• $50 to $90 per hour.
