Associate General Counsel, Advocacy and Political Law (Washington)

The Associate General Counsel, Advocacy and Political Law reports to the Deputy General Counsel within the Office of the General Counsel at Planned Parenthood National Office.

Purpose

• Ensures that the National Office complies with applicable laws and regulations governing exempt organizations (including 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and 527 organizations) by providing efficient and effective counsel to internal clients.
• Serves as one of the principal attorneys for several internal client teams, including External Affairs, Finance, and Development.

Engagement

• Works closely with clients and colleagues across the National Office, including senior leadership, subject matter specialists, supervising attorneys, and governance experts.
• Builds collaborative partnerships to support compliance with relevant laws and to mitigate risk.
• Regularly collaborates with outside counsel on exempt organization tax compliance, fundraising, lobbying, and campaign finance issues.

Delivery

• Provides subject‑matter expertise and advises National Office staff on legal and regulatory requirements for exempt organizations.
• Ensures compliance with tax, campaign finance, lobbying disclosure, gift and ethics rules, and fundraising regulations.
• Educates and trains staff and senior leadership on legal risks and obligations related to tax‑exempt status, governance, charitable solicitation laws, and advocacy work.
• Collaborates with fundraising staff on charitable solicitation registration, gift acceptance policies, and fundraising regulations.
• Advises on nonprofit accounting matters, fund accounting principles, and financial reporting obligations for 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) entities.
• Participates in the definition and development of corporate policies, procedures, and programs.
• Assists in selection, retention, and supervision of outside counsel to support programmatic and operational needs.
• Performs additional duties as assigned by the SVP and General Counsel and Deputy General Counsels.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Juris Doctor from an ABA‑accredited U.S. law school required.
• Bar admission in New York or Washington, D.C. required.
• Minimum seven years of practice in exempt‑organization tax matters, advocacy and campaign finance laws, communications law, and nonprofit governance preferred.
• Expertise in exempt‑organization tax and campaign finance laws essential.
• Experience as in‑house counsel or for a relevant regulator preferred.
• Experience in non‑profit accounting and charitable solicitation law preferred.
• General knowledge of intellectual property law and contract law.
• Exceptional research, analytical, and problem‑solving skills; ability to think strategically and creatively.
• Ability to provide sound business advice and first‑rate legal counsel to executives and senior leaders.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to manage relationships with diverse stakeholders.
• Ability to develop strong collaborative relationships with fellow attorneys, staff, and clients.
• Demonstrated agility, adaptability, and practicality in providing legal advice.
• Excellent judgment and proven risk‑analysis experience.
• Commitment to providing professional and timely legal advice to all clients.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to translate complex legal concepts into accessible language.
• Demonstrated ability to excel under pressure in a fast‑paced, innovative, rapidly changing environment while maintaining collaborative relationships.

Salary: $160,000 – $190,000 per year. Travel: 0–10% domestic travel.
