Deputy Director Transportation

Job Description Summary Position Department: Transportation Job Type: Unclassified Job Classification: 1050 - Deputy Director Transportation Salary Grade: 20 Pay Range: $123,489 - $185,224 annually (Hiring Range: $123,489 - $169,790) Essential Functions Plan, organize and direct assigned functions and activities of the Transportation Department. Coordinate activities of subordinate divisions internally, with other County departments and external agencies. Review recommendations and advise the Director on capital improvement and major projects. Plan, schedule, and assign work to division managers and coordinate work between them. Review budget proposals of subordinate divisions and participate in departmental budget development. Develop and implement policies and procedures for subordinate divisions and participate in departmental policy development. Recommend selection and appointment of management and supervisory personnel. Supervise, train and evaluate assigned staff. May use the seal of registration as a Professional Engineer to certify engineering plans, maps, specifications or technical reports. May perform statutory requirements of the Director and act as department head in the Director's absence. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in public administration, business administration, civil engineering, urban and regional planning, transportation engineering or other closely related field. Eight years of technical and managerial experience in transportation engineering, roadway construction or a closely related field, including at least two years in an administrative, technical, or managerial capacity. Relevant education and experience must be clearly documented in the application. Preferred Qualifications Registration as a Professional Engineer in Arizona, or ability to obtain Arizona registration within six months of appointment. Minimum ten (10) years of experience in project delivery, development, and construction of improvement projects and familiarity with design criteria and construction methods. Minimum ten (10) years of experience building consensus and delivering complex information verbally and in writing to diverse audiences. Minimum five (5) years of experience leveraging technology via software and devices to achieve or improve departmental objectives. Minimum five (5) years of experience developing and managing a large multidisciplinary team (over 20 employees). Licenses and Certificates Valid driver’s license required at time of application and appointment. Valid Arizona driver’s license required at time of appointment. Candidate will be subject to a 39‑month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine suitability to operate county vehicles. Failure to obtain and maintain required licenses and certifications may result in termination. Physical/Sensory Requirements Action: bending, kneeling, reaching; Motion: grasping; Hearing: behind themselves, equipment alarms; Speaking: in person, on a phone; Vision: must be able to operate a motor vehicle, distinguish color, have depth perception, have peripheral vision.
