Job Summary
SummaryED: The Unit Service Technician provides a broad range of care and services to patients, including but not to limited to EKG, phlebotomy, equipment cleaning, and stocking of rooms under the supervision of a licensed nurse. They perform a wide range of secretarial duties, including but not limited to organizing paperwork, answering the phone, paging, and receiving of Emergency Department patients into the medi-tech computer system. They will provide safe accurate transportation of patients throughout the hospital. They will perform 1:1 sitting when necessary. The Unit Service Technician of the Emergency Department will also assure the practice of the Patient and Family Centered Care Model in an environment that exemplifies best practice. ICU: The ICU Unit Service Technician provides a broad range of care and services to ICU patients under the supervision of a licensed nurse, including but not to limited to, phlebotomy, blood glucose monitoring, completing EKGs, supporting procedures within their scope, patient transport, securing equipment and supplies, and responding to medical emergency situations utilizing Heartsaver CPR and AED skills. They will also perform a wide range of secretarial duties and perform 1:1 sitting when necessary.
The Unit Service Technician of the ICU will also assure the practice of the Patient and Family Centered Care Model in an environment that exemplifies best practice. The Unit Services Tech provides direct and indirect care to patients to ensure efficient patient flow and high-quality patient care. OPIC: The Ambulatory Unit Service Technician (UST) provides direct and indirect care to patients in the Outpatient Infusion Center to ensure efficient patient flow and high-quality patient care. Under the supervision of the Clinical Leader/Charge Nurse/Nursing Director the UST performs various clinical duties which facilitate each patient's readiness for surgery. The Ambulatory UST provides a broad range of care and services to patients, including but not to limited to, EKG, phlebotomy, blood glucose monitoring, supporting Ambulatory procedures within their scope, responding to medical emergency situations utilizing Heartsaver CPR and AED skills, patient transport and securing equipment and supplies. The UST will provide safe accurate transportation of patients. The Unit Service Technician will also assure the practice of the Patient and Family Centered Care Model in an environment that exemplifies best practice. Perioperative: The Perianesthesia Unit Service Technician (UST) provides direct and indirect care to perioperative patients to ensure efficient patient flow and high-quality patient care. Under the supervision of the Clinical Leader/Charge Nurse/Nursing Director the UST performs various clinical duties which facilitate each patient's readiness for surgery. The Perianesthesia UST provides a broad range of care and services to patients, including but not to limited to, EKG, phlebotomy, blood glucose monitoring, completing EKGs, supporting Perianesthesia procedures within their scope, responding to medical emergency situations utilizing Heartsaver CPR and AED skills, patient transport and securing equipment and supplies. They will provide safe and accurate transportation for patients. The Unit Service Technician will also assure the practice of the Patient and Family Centered Care Model in an environment that exemplifies best practice. IV Therapy: The Unit Service Technician works as part of the IV Therapy team and provides direct and indirect care to patients to ensure efficient patient flow and quality patient care. Under the supervision of the Nursing Director or designee, the Unit Service Technician performs various administrative and direct/indirect patient care duties for each patient. The Unit Service Technician also assures the practice of the Patient and Family Centered Care Model in an environment that exemplifies best practice. Sterile technique experience preferred. Yes Essential Functions
-ED:
1. PROVISION OF SAFE ENVIRONMENT
• Utilizes proper body mechanics in moving and assisting patients to prevent personal injury.
• Follows and maintains restraint policies under supervision of licensed nurse. Checks with nurse for order before utilizing any restraints.
• Applies restraints under the direction of the provider, in accordance with hospital policy and assures for the availability and reliability of those restraints.
• Conducts or assures cleaning of medical equipment and clinical environment routinely and between patient use to prevent nosocomial infection.
2. PERFORMS SECRETARIAL DUTIES TO ENSURE EFFICIENT OPERATION OF EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT.
• Answers patient call lights, telephone and screen calls in a pleasant and courteous manner, relaying accurate messages to appropriate personal, as observed or reported by staff and callers.
• Receives visitors to the department in a professional manner, projecting a positive public image.
• Copies patient’s charts and other materials as requested by staff.
• Provides secretarial support in order to ensure efficient and confidential flow of information for patient's medical records.
• Requests and maintains old medical records as needed.
• Pages for providers as necessary.
• Copying of medical records to prepare for transfer.
• Provides secretarial assistance to the Medical Director or Attending Physician as necessary and as time allows.
• Delivers specimens to the laboratory as needed such as in a Code Blue situation as requested by staff.
• Arranges ambulance transfer in the absence of the department secretary. 3. PERFORMS ASSIGNED PATIENT TRANSPORTATION TO ENSURE PATIENTS RECEIVE ALL TESTING PROCEDURES ORDERED IN A TO TIMELY MANNER. ENSURES THAT PATIENT SAFETY IS NEVER COMPROMISED DURING TRANSPORT.
• Stretcher is cleaned after every transport with an antibacterial as provided in the department.
• Performs the transportation of the deceased to the morgue in a respectful manner. Always uses proper morgue stretcher and is accompanied by a second escort.
• Follows proper department procedures concerning the handling of all specimens during transport.
• Strictly practices Standard Precautions. Checks with nursing staff for specific instructions if necessary.
• Assists nursing in transport of critical patients as necessary.
4. PERFORMS TECHNICAL DUTIES INCLUDING EKG, PHLEBOTOMY UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF A LICENSED NURSE.
• Adheres to laboratory policy and procedure when retrieving lab specimens including the proper labeling of all specimens.
• Performs EKGs as requested by nursing/provider and obtains old EKGs in MUSE system.
• EKG’S and brought to provider for immediate review upon completion.
• Obtains lab specimens as requested by nursing/provider.
• Obtains labs for in-house draws on 11p-7a shift for 1am and 4am rounds, in accordance with lab policy.
• Assist providers with patient procedures as needed.
• Responsible for cleaning and restocking of glidescope.
• Notification of need for repair of medical equipment to appropriate parties.
• Stocking of rooms in accordance with assignment on each shift.

• Provides basic nursing care to patients including bathing, shaving, mouth care, peril-care, and linen changes as directed and requested by licensed nursing staff. Maintains standard precautions in delivery of care.
• Takes vital signs, completes intake and outtake data, and daily weights as directed and requested by the licensed nursing staff.
• Responds to all patient call lights in a timely manner.
• Understands and utilizes body substance isolation.
• Provides technical support for the ICU licensed nurse staff by performing tasks which may include, but not limited to: EKG, Phlebotomy, Accucheck, 02 Sat, simple dressings-by request and under the direction of the RN.

Accompanies the PICC Nurse to placement of peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) and acts as an assistant to the person placing the catheter. Duties may include direct physical care of the patient. Routine functions include:
• Sets up clean work area and sterile field with supplies necessary for procedure and checks for expiration dates on sterile products.
• Opens and or drops sterile solutions.
• Assists patient with necessary position changes during PICC placement.
• Disposes of contaminated and used supplies appropriately.
• Cleans patient work area following procedures paying attention to the disposal of hazardous or contaminated materials.
• Maintains familiarity with expected patient outcomes of all tasks performed; recognizes situation requiring RN notification.
• Collects and records patient data including catheter placement on the daily log sheets.
• Exhibits strong understanding of surgical asepsis including recognition and resolution of any break in aseptic technique.,
• Ensures patient safety during procedures following proper lifting/transferring techniques including use of side rails when appropriate.
• Stocking of supply carts and collects and assemble daily PICC insertion supplies.
• Maintains patient logs of requests in database of PICC placement including reason for PICC, location, and urgency of PICC.
• Communicates effectively with PICC RN responsible for patient area so that they may assess condition of patient’s venous access and likelihood of catheter placement.
• Develops and maintains positive working relationships with team members and patients.
• All other duties as assigned/designated by the Nurse Director.
• Utilizes Epic HER to document all appropriate care.
