Scientist, Downstream Vaccines and Advanced Biotechnologies (VAX) Process R&D

Merck seeks a scientist to lead downstream bioprocess and bioconjugation development for vaccine candidates at its West Point, PA facility. The role combines independent process development work with cross-functional collaboration and technical mentorship across analytical, formulation, and manufacturing teams.
Responsibilities
- Design, execute, and analyze downstream process development experiments to optimize vaccine production
- Lead vaccine drug substance process development and tech transfer to clinical/commercial manufacturing
- Represent functional area in cross-functional teams focused on vaccine development strategy
- Mentor colleagues and provide technical guidance on bioprocess and bioconjugation development
- Conduct analytical characterization using HPLC, electrophoresis, spectroscopy, and light scattering
Requirements
- BS, MS, or PhD in chemical engineering, bioengineering, chemistry, biochemistry, or related life sciences
- Two years pharmaceutical/biotechnology experience (BS holders) or one year post-graduate bioprocess experience (MS holders)
- Hands-on bioprocess development experience in academic or industry settings
- Deep understanding of downstream purification operations for large complex molecules
- Knowledge of bioprocess scaling principles and unit operations
- Willingness to work with infectious agents and pathogens; ability to travel occasionally
Compensation: $87,300–$137,400 base
