About the Unit The Newborn Nursery at UNC REX offers specialized, compassionate care for healthy and late‑preterm newborns during their first days of life. Located within a high‑volume Labor & Delivery Unit that handles over 5,000 births annually, the nursery plays a vital role in supporting infants born via both vaginal and cesarean deliveries. Our primary focus is to ensure each newborn receives early assessments, feeding support, and a safe, smooth transition to home. In this nurturing environment, our experienced nurses and pediatric providers work together to promote the well‑being of both the newborns and their families. We place a strong emphasis on encouraging bonding, providing breastfeeding support, and prioritizing newborn safety at all times. Our team operates in close collaboration with the Level IV NICU, Postpartum Unit, and Labor & Delivery team, ensuring that each newborn receives exceptional, individualized care tailored to their unique needs. Summary Provides competent clinical nursing care consistent with professional standards. Reporting and accountable to the Nurse Manager/Director, the Clinical Nurse is responsible for coordinating and delivering patient care utilizing the nursing process in a hospital setting. Responsibilities Education – Participate in identifying and meeting learning needs of self. Attend education programs based on identified needs. Use patient education materials relevant to patient population. Assess readiness to learn of patient/family/caregivers. Assess developmental level of patient and factors affecting ability to learn. Evaluation of Care – Identify expected patient outcomes. Seek guidance as needed in revision of plan of care. Participate in discussion with members of the interdisciplinary team in evaluation of patient care. Communicate relevant information to promote continuity of care. Implementation – Demonstrate competence in care of patients with complex problems, including population‑appropriate physical, psychosocial, educational and safety aspects of care. Perform bedside point‑of‑care testing as required. Utilize healthcare organization and nursing standards, policies and procedures in delivery of care. Organize and prioritize care according to patient/family needs. Consult with appropriate resources in a timely fashion regarding patients with complex care issues, unusual teaching needs and/or those at high risk for discharge planning. Leadership – With assistance, develop goals to promote professional growth or minimize limitations. Achieve goals and objectives within identified time frame or renegotiate with supervisor. Be knowledgeable about activities which facilitate intra/interdepartmental collaboration. Participate in development and achievement of unit goals and performance improvement activities. Effectively use communication systems. Participate in promoting cost‑effective care. Give feedback to co‑workers. Be aware of public policy and regulatory guidelines affecting the health care environment. Promote a safe, clean and secure hospital environment for all. Patient Assessment – Recognize data from complex situations to determine priorities for care. Include appropriate physical, psychosocial, educational and safety needs. Synthesize assessment data into meaningful whole prior to communication to others. Assess and anticipate discharge needs of individual patients and families. Develop relationships with families that promote their ability to advocate for the patient and their own needs. Planning – Collaborate with patient/family to prepare or update the plan of care. Make use of available multidisciplinary resources in planning care. Begin to use full range of communication as a means to convey planning. Identify and address cultural and ethnic issues in planning patient care. Demonstrate ability to prioritize tasks for patients with complex problems. Research – Read journals that contain studies or articles that may be applicable to practice. Bring ideas and questions to the staff at large for assessment of applicability. Other Information Education Requirements: Graduation from a school of professional nursing. If hired after January 6, 2014, must be enrolled within four years of employment and obtain a Bachelor’s degree with a major in Nursing or a Master’s degree with a major in Nursing within seven years of employment date. Licensure/Certification Requirements: Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina. Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification. Professional Experience Requirements: One (1) year of nursing experience.
