Location: Springfield, IL
Salary: $55,000-$60,000 per year

Express Employment Professionals is recruiting for a Payroll Accountant in Springfield, IL for a well-established, mission-driven organization. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced payroll or accounting professional to join a collaborative finance team and play an important role in accurate payroll processing, payroll accounting, financial reporting, and compliance.


The Payroll Accountant will be responsible for full-cycle payroll processing while also supporting general accounting functions, account reconciliations, journal entries, month-end close, audits, and financial reporting. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, organized, dependable, and comfortable handling confidential employee and payroll information.

Payroll Accountant Responsibilities:

• Process full-cycle payroll accurately and timely for employees
• Review payroll information for accuracy before processing
• Maintain payroll records, employee deductions, benefits, and payroll allocations
• Calculate and process payroll deductions and benefit contributions
• Ensure payroll processing complies with applicable federal, state, and local regulations
• Reconcile payroll accounts and investigate discrepancies
• Prepare and post payroll-related journal entries to the general ledger
• Assist with month-end and year-end accounting close procedures
• Support payroll, benefits, and financial audits
• Prepare payroll-related reports and documentation
• Work closely with Human Resources and the Finance team to maintain accurate employee and payroll data
• Respond to employee payroll questions and resolve issues in a timely and professional manner

Payroll Accountant Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred
• 2+ years of payroll, payroll accounting, or accounting experience
• Experience with full-cycle payroll processing preferred
• Working knowledge of payroll systems and Microsoft Excel
• Understanding of payroll taxes, deductions, benefits, and compliance requirements
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
