MLL Teacher (50% Phillips Middle School and 50% East Chapel Hill High School) Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Phillips Middle School - Chapel Hill, North Carolina Job ID: 5779373 | Application Deadline: Posted until filled | Posted: Jun 12, 2026 7:02 PM (UTC) Job Description At CHCCS, a Multilingual Learner (MLL) teacher’s goal is to provide students with the help, counsel, and learning experience they need to make progress toward educational goals established, to create a flexible instructional program and a classroom environment favorable to learning and personal growth, and to establish effective rapport with pupils; to motivate pupils to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to live a rewarding life in an ever-changing world. MLL teachers instruct students whose dominant language is a language other than English. The goal is to teach the NC English Language Proficiency Standard Course of Study. MLL teachers instruct English language learners to read, speak, listen, and write English so they can achieve grade‑level proficiency in all academic areas. MLL teachers must be highly knowledgeable in the content and structure of the English language as well as the methodology for teaching English to non‑native speakers. Essential Duties Develop lesson plans and instructional materials Provide individualized and small‑group instruction to adapt the curriculum to each student’s needs Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to students’ maturity and interests Establish and maintain standards of student behavior for a functional learning atmosphere Guide the learning process toward curriculum goals Establish clear objectives for lessons, units, and projects; communicate these objectives to students Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media Evaluate students’ academic and social growth, record progress, and prepare progress reports Communicate with parents via conferences and other means to discuss student progress and interpret the school program Identify pupil needs and collaborate with professional staff to address health, attitude, and learning problems Maintain professional competence through in‑service and self‑directed professional growth activities Participate in curriculum development programs, faculty committees, and sponsorship of student activities Instruct pupils using board‑approved courses of study and appropriate learning activities Translate lesson plans into engaging learning experiences to maximize instructional time Coordinate and administer WIDA Screener and ACCESS 2.0 English language tests Collaborate with colleagues to promote an optimal learning environment for pupils Perform related duties assigned by supervisor Maintain compliance with all policy and procedural standards Education and Experience Requirements Holds or is eligible to hold a North Carolina teaching license; must have ESL licensure area Certification in additional core content licensure areas preferred Bachelor’s Degree required Prior teaching experience preferred Other acceptable alternatives may be considered by the board Physical Requirements Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards Disclosure This document provides descriptive information about the above Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School position.
