Overview Trossen Robotics is an industry leader in research and educational robotics, specializing in the design, development, and integration of manipulators and UGVs. We offer an opportunity for an engineer to gain hands‑on experience on robotic platforms and manipulators. Responsibilities Perform CAD work under the direction of the Lead Mechanical Engineer on R&D and product design projects for mobile robotic platforms and manipulators. Apply the typical design process, which includes integration of third‑party electromechanical devices, shell design for aesthetics and mounting rails, fitting electrical components into the robot chassis and navigation stacks, designing modular mounting systems and access panels for ease of maintenance, wiring components with appropriate cable runs and connectors, and weatherproofing the entire system. Develop robotic manipulator designs, selecting servos, determining joint configurations, designing brackets and linkages, and considering aesthetic appeal, assembly efficiency, fabrication methods, cost and cable management. Typical Design Process Integration of third‑party electromechanical devices such as robotic manipulators, pan & tilt devices, cameras, sensors, motors, servos, linear actuators, batteries, charging stations, radios, and antennas. Shell designs for aesthetics and mounting rails. Fitting electrical components inside the robot chassis and navigation stacks. Smart design of modular mounting systems and access panels focused on ease of maintenance. Wiring of components, cable runs, connectors design, and selection. Weatherproofing of the entire system. Skills Necessary CAD proficiency in Fusion 360, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or PTC Creo to create detailed 2D and 3D models. Ability to conceptualize and discuss 3D parts for design and prototyping. Basic knowledge of manufacturing processes: 3D printing, laser‑cut plastic & metals, CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, molding. Ability to work independently with a high‑level task. Strong desire to learn, improve skills, and curiosity for new technologies. Skills You Will Be Working On Design for Manufacturing (DFM): optimizing designs for efficient manufacturing. Design for Assembly (DFA): simplifying and streamlining assembly processes. 3D Modeling: proper constraint design and sketch methodology. Engineering Drawings: creating accurate and detailed drawings with proper annotations. Prototyping: rapid design and iteration of prototypes. Optimizing project workflows for maximized speed. Component sourcing & vendor selection. Prototyping order of operations from rough design to aesthetics. Tolerance Analysis: basic tolerance analysis for proper fit and function. Material Selection for Design: selecting appropriate materials based on application, manufacturability, and cost. Engineering Documentation: creating comprehensive drawings and maintaining thorough documentation. Location Chicago suburbs, Downers Grove (transportation required).
