Associate Engineer, Building Optimization

Recruiting, hiring, and training City employees. Managing 56 public buildings. Acquiring, selling, and leasing City property. Purchasing over $1 billion in goods and services for City agencies. Overseeing the greenest municipal vehicle fleet in the country. Leading the City’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions from government operations. Responsibilities Project management: support the Engineering team with the management of a portfolio of highly technical RCx projects, including scoping, ensuring compliance with LL87, managing project budgets, and performing project inspections. Technical oversight: provide technical expertise on mechanical design drawings, project scope and costs, energy‑savings calculations, LL87 compliance, and other advanced technical support for LL87‑related initiatives. Performance management: support the Engineering team in monitoring, reporting, and maintaining project‑level tracking of key performance metrics such as RCx project completion rates, budget variances, and GHG reductions. Agency engagement: facilitate routine correspondence with City agencies to drive project management, set clear expectations, and build professional connections to improve program success. Program expansion: support the Engineering team in expanding an innovative city‑wide building optimization program that focuses on preventative maintenance and utilizes advanced analytics to automate controls for operational and energy efficiencies. Minimum Qualifications Baccalaureate degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or mechatronics and one year of full‑time satisfactory experience in mechanical engineering work. Baccalaureate degree in mechanical engineering technology and three years of full‑time satisfactory experience in mechanical engineering work. Baccalaureate degree and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering or mechatronics. Preferred Skills Experience in engineering, architecture, energy management, construction project management, or a related field. Thorough knowledge of building science and energy‑consuming building processes and equipment, including lighting, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, BAS, and energy distribution systems. Experience with technical project management operations, including project planning, scope development, implementation oversight, site inspections, and project close‑out. Familiarity with customer relationship management software (e.g., Salesforce, Monday.com). Ability to read and interpret control drawings, mechanical drawings, and wiring diagrams. Knowledge of energy‑savings calculations, GHG calculation methodologies, and NYC Local Laws on green building and energy efficiency. Knowledge of and experience with ASHRAE, AEE procedures, and NYC Energy Conservation Code. Credentials such as Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Certified Energy Auditor (CEA), or Certified Building Commissioning Professional (CBCP). Strong communication skills (oral and written) and proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
