Salary Range: $3,203.20 - $4,300.80 (Based on a 0.80 FTE (32 hours per week))

Starting salary for this position is: $3,203.20 (Monthly)

Employees hired at the entry step of this range receive salary step advancement after six months and every 12 months thereafter. An employee hired at anything higher than the entry step of the range will have salary step advancement after 12 months and every 12 months thereafter until they reach the top of the salary range. Each salary step advancement will be approximately a 5% increase.

JOB SUMMARY

The ASL Lab & Instructional Support Technician provides specialized professional and technical support to the American Sign Language Interpreter Education (ASLIE) program at Spokane Falls Community College. Under general supervision, this position coordinates instructional support activities for the ASLIE lab and program, provides direct student support in ASL, manages course content and instructional materials and coordinates the operational, and technical functions essential to deliver across modalities.

This position requires professional fluency in American Sign Language and serves as a bilingual communication bridge between Deaf and hearing faculty, staff, and students.

As a Deaf professional and native or highly proficient ASL user, this position also serves as a daily language model, cultural resource, and mentor for students preparing to enter the interpreting profession. These language immersion and cultural competency functions are integral to interpreter education and cannot be replicated through technology or general campus support services.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Lab and Student Support

• Open, monitor, and maintain the ASL Lab; ensure equipment, materials, and space are clean, organized, and ready for daily student use and faculty-directed activities. *
• Provide direct student support in the ASL Lab, including one-on-one and small-group assistance with ASL grammar, vocabulary, receptive and expressive skills, and conversation practice. *
• Serve as a daily Deaf language model and cultural resource, providing students with authentic ASL interaction and reinforcing the cultural competencies essential for future interpreters. *
• Ensure a culturally respectful, accessible, and supportive environment for deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing students and faculty. *

Assessment Coordination

• Coordinate all logistics for EIPA (Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment) written and performance administrations, including scheduling with proctors and building staff, room preparation, technology setup, and post-assessment equipment breakdown; manage 12-15 assessment dates per academic year. *
• Serve as program liaison with the Boys Town National Research Hospital EIPA Workshop Coordinator, managing student registration, workshop dates and deadlines, and group rate contract information. *

Program Application Support

• Coordinate the ASLIE program application process, including organizing prospective student files, distributing application and informational materials, scanning and filing completed applications, verifying applicant video links, and compiling faculty evaluation scores in program spreadsheets. *

Course and Instructional Materials Management

• Maintain, modernize, and manage the ASLIE program's collection of 1,000+ ASL-specific instructional videos; locate, organize, and update file types to ensure compatibility with Canvas and academic visual learning platforms. *
• Maintain and update master course content across 26 ASLIE courses in Canvas, ensuring a cohesive, accessible, and consistent program appearance across face-to-face, synchronous online, and asynchronous online delivery formats. *
• Ensure consistency in course content, assignments, assessments, and learning outcomes across all course sections and modalities, supporting equitable student access and preparation for national assessments and professional practice. *
• Edit, update, and maintain faculty-authored program workbooks and student instructional materials to reflect current program standards and professional practices. *
• Develop student instructional videos for specialized interpreter education software and technology used within the profession. *
• Adjust and standardize course materials to meet individual student accommodation needs in coordination with faculty and college accessibility requirements. *

Technical Support

• Provide first-line technical support and troubleshooting for Canvas, Panopto, hardware, and software issues during class sessions, special events, and program activities; ensure timely resolution to minimize disruption to instruction. *
• Problem-solve technical equipment issues and serve as liaison for the videophone system used by deaf and hearing faculty and staff. *
• Perform beginning-, mid-, and end-of-quarter equipment checks, classroom supply distribution, and whiteboard maintenance for ASLIE classrooms. *
• Set up classroom with equipment required for teaching, specific to instructor's needs.

Bilingual Communication and Faculty Liaison

• Serve as bilingual liaison between Deaf and hearing ASLIE faculty, staff, and program partners, communicating directly in ASL to facilitate timely and effective communication without requiring interpreter services. *
• Maintain regular communication with ASLIE faculty throughout each quarter to coordinate program activities, address emerging needs, and ensure operational continuity. *

Research, Outreach, and Program Development

• Research and evaluate new programs, products, technologies, and legislative developments affecting interpreter education to support program currency and responsiveness to evolving professional standards. *
• Create and maintain promotional and recruitment materials for the ASLIE program, including flyers, videos, and informational resources for recruitment and community engagement. *

Inventory, Records, and Operations

• Maintain inventory of ASL DVDs, books, equipment, and lab supplies; process supply requests through appropriate college ordering channels. *
• Maintain program records, tracking logs, equipment check-out records, attendance sheets, and student participation data as directed by faculty. *
• Direct the work of student work-study employees as assigned.

General

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• A high school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
• Professional fluency in American Sign Language required to serve as a bilingual communication bridge between Deaf and hearing faculty, staff, and students
• Two or more years in an administrative support environment that demonstrates that the candidate meets all competency requirements for the position.
• Knowledge of or experience using computers and software functions necessary in a modern office environment, including knowledge of Microsoft Office products (especially Word and Excel), Adobe Acrobat Pro (or similar), database systems, and virtual meeting platforms.
• Demonstrated experience carrying out multiple functions and responsibilities with differing deadlines and priorities while working independently and staying organized in a fast-paced environment.
• Proven ability to understand, track, monitor, and reconcile budgets.
• Experience in maintaining confidentiality, communicating clearly, working independently, and managing time effectively.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Associate degree or higher.
• Three or more years of progressively responsible experience in an office or general administrative support work.
• Experience in a higher education environment.
• Experience using Student Information Systems (PeopleSoft, ctcLink) and event software (25Live).
• Supervisory skills and experience.

• Work is performed in an office environment with frequent interruptions and background noise.
• Work is sedentary.
• Seldom move up to 25 lbs.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

• Cyclic schedule (11 months, 32 hours per week).
• This position is overtime eligible.
• 6-month probationary period.
• May require infrequent local or regional travel.
• Criminal background check is required.
• This position is covered under a collective bargaining agreement. Membership is optional.

Medical, dental, life and long term disability insurance benefits are provided as currently administered under Public Employees Benefits Board; WA State Retirement Plan; vacation and sick leave begin to accrue at the rate of 11.33 hours vacation and 8 hours sick leave per month, upon employment. (For positions that are less than full time, leave accruals will be prorated to the percentage of the position.) This position is designated a bargaining unit position and union membership is not a condition of employment. Leave accruals and usage are governed by the WFSE collective bargaining agreement.
