Under immediate supervision, to perform unskilled and low level semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and improvement of public works and park facilities; to operate maintenance and construction tools and equipment; and to perform a variety of maintenance tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

• Performs unskilled and low level semi-skilled maintenance and repair work on various City facilities and structures including streets, parks, sewer, and other public facilities;

• loads and unloads maintenance and construction materials from trucks;

• mixes concrete; waters;

• digs and back fills trenches;

• assists on concrete, masonry and asphalt repair work;

• rakes and finishes asphalt;

• repairs and replaces city sign posts and traffic signs;

• performs USA markings on city streets; does general clean up work;

• assists in performing general maintenance duties inside and outside of buildings including painting, removing graffiti, installing doors and windows, and moving furniture;

• cleans, sanitizes, and maintains assigned buildings, offices and restroom facilities;

• assists in repairing a variety of interior and exterior building and facility components and systems including plumbing and electrical systems;

• drives pick-up or other light trucks;

• Operates construction and maintenance equipment and power tools such as vibrator roller, back hoe, loaders, fork lift, jack hammer, and chain saw;

• maintains hand tools and assigned equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of: basic methods and techniques of general construction, maintenance and repair related to the area of work assigned; common hand tools; basic knowledge of methods and techniques of repairing sidewalks, curbs and related maintenance areas; knowledge of basic practices and procedures of traffic control; knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
Ability to: perform a variety of maintenance, construction and repair work in the area of work assigned; use common hand tools; perform heavy manual labor; ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures; knowledge of principles and practices of record keeping; read and write; follow written and oral directions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Education and Experience: Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain this required knowledge would be:
Educational achievement equivalent to graduation from high school and one year of experience in general laboring work.
Licenses/Certificates: Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License with a safe driving record is required or the ability to get from point to point for meetings and trainings.

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a field environment; to walk, stand, and sit for prolonged periods of time; to frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach, twist, grasp, and make repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties; to climb unusual heights on ladders; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull moderate to heavy amounts of weight; to operate assigned equipment and vehicles; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.
Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction.
Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
Educational Allowance: The City agrees that employees who desire to enroll in training and/or academic courses at a State of California approved and/or recognized college or university that may provide the employee with general or specific skills and/or knowledge that contributes to their ability to perform their current position or enhances promotional opportunities shall have their course fees, books, and tuition for any CSU campus rates paid by the city (employee who attend a non-CSU campus will receive up to the average of CSULB, CSUDH, & CSULA), subject to approval of the City Manager.

Vacation Leave:

• 1-3 Years of employment: 80 hours per year of Vacation Leave
• 4-5 Years of employment: 96 hours per year of Vacation Leave
• 6-9 Years of employment: 120 hours per year of Vacation Leave
• 10-13 Years of employment: 144 hours per year of Vacation Leave
• 14-17 Years of employment: 168 hours per year of Vacation Leave
• 18+ Years of employment: 192 hours per year of Vacation Leave

Sick Leave: Employees will accrue 10 hours of Sick Leave per month.

Holidays: The City observes 12 holidays throughout the year.

Deferred Compensation : The City will match an employee contribution up to $25 per month.


INSURANCE
Medical: Employees receive up to $1,875.39 per month to purchase medical insurance; premium cost above this amount is paid by the employee.
Dental: Employees receive up to $226.30 per month to purchase dental insurance; premium cost above this amount is paid by the employee.
Vision: Vision insurance is available for purchase
Life: The City provides life insurance in the amount of $50,000.
Short-term Disability and Long-term Disability: The City provides coverage for both short-term and long-term disability.
Employee Assistance Program: The City provides coverage for the employee and eligible dependents.
