A day in the life

At 6:00 a.m., you clock in and get right to work in a busy fabrication shop. With minimal oversight, you review drawings and QC plans, stage material, and prepare your work area. You measure to 1/64 inch, lay out and fit components, and set up your welding machines and plasma torch for the job at hand. Grinders, torches, overhead cranes, and forklifts are part of your daily toolkit as you cut, burn, fit, weld, and straighten heavy materials for pressure-rated assemblies.

Throughout the shift, you read AWS symbols and follow weld procedures precisely. You build fixtures to secure parts, keep tight tolerances, and perform basic NDE such as LPT and VT. When required, you produce radiographic-quality welds. By 4:00 p.m., another safe, high-quality build is complete and documented.

• Perform cutting and burning operations to support fabrication.
• Lay out, fit, weld, and straighten a variety of materials with little to no supervision.
• Set up and adjust welding equipment and plasma torches for FCAW, GMAW, and GTAW.
• Interpret blueprints and AWS weld symbols; execute to specified tolerances.
• Follow weld procedures, QC plans, and work instructions.
• Fabricate jigs/fixtures to secure work during welding.
• Use grinders, torches, plasma cutters, overhead cranes, and forklifts daily.
• Occasionally perform x-ray (radiographic) quality welds.
• Conduct basic NDE (LPT and VT) and document results as required.

• Proven safety mindset and training in construction/manufacturing settings.
• Ability to read a tape measure to 1/64 inch.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
• Fluency with FCAW, GMAW, and GTAW across multiple positions.
• 5+ years of welding/fitting experience on ASME Code pressure vessels.
• Comfort setting up and fine-tuning welding machines and plasma equipment.
• Solid understanding of tolerances and why maintaining them matters.

• Completion and passing of a physical assessment.
• Daily repetitive wrist, hand, and finger movements (gripping and torqueing).
• Daily standing, walking, bending, crouching, and stooping.
• Lift 25–50 lbs on a routine basis.
• Work around moving machinery with exposure to dust, dirt, grease, and similar elements.
• Ability to hear emergency communications and alarms.

• 10-hour shop schedule: Monday–Thursday, 6:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. (40 hours).
• Overtime available Friday and Saturday.
• Night shift also available with a 10% night shift pay differential.
