Safety and Occupational Health Specialist

Summary Employee will serve as a Safety and Occupational Health Specialist located at the Southwest Consolidated Mail Outpatient Pharmacy (CMOP) – Veterans Healthcare System in Tucson, AZ. Qualifications Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum qualification requirements to qualify for this GS‑11 Safety and Occupational Health Specialist position. Specialized Experience : Requires one full year of specialized experience in or related to safety and occupational health that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. Experience must be equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS‑9). Qualifying experience includes managing safety or occupational health program elements, developing policy, applying laws and regulations, establishing standards, reducing accident costs, analyzing hazards, designing workplaces, inspecting compliance, training personnel, and working in fields such as industrial hygiene or occupational health nursing. Substitution of Education for Experience (Transcripts Required) : Successfully completed a Ph‑D or equivalent doctoral degree, or LL.M. related to safety or occupational health, with a major in one of the following areas: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, or industrial psychology, and at least 24 semester hours of related study. Combination of Education and Experience (Transcripts Required) : A combination of more than two years of graduate education and experience that meets the overall qualification requirements. The primary purpose of this position is the day‑to‑day administration and execution of the facility’s safety and fire prevention program, including preparation of all policies, reports, safety‑occupational health and fire prevention‑related correspondence. Ensure that inspection and testing of all fire protection equipment and systems is conducted in accordance with applicable codes and policies. Ensure the ongoing inspection and testing of fire extinguishers and fire alarm systems and direct the overall program. Investigate lost‑time accidents and fire incidents. Prepare analyses of accident and injury trends for review and action by the facility Safety Committee. Review all accident reports for completeness, accuracy, and adequacy of corrective actions. Conduct accident investigations and analyze conditions and code deficiencies to inform management and meeting reporting schedules. Conduct workplace inspections throughout the facility and storage areas. Compile and document accident statistics. Schedule hazard evaluations of identified hazards and review all hazard reports for completeness and corrective actions. Conduct general and fire safety training classes for all employees, including specialized supervisory training. Design and execute an employee awareness program in safety. Schedule, conduct, and document fire drills and emergency preparedness drills in all areas of the facility. Act as co‑chair of the Emergency Preparedness Committee and follow up on deficiencies identified during drills. Perform any related duties as assigned. Work schedule: Monday‑Friday, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm. Telework may be authorized for ad‑hoc requests.
