Summary

Under the general direction of the Road Department Supervisor, the Road Worker performs a variety of road and garage maintenance activities to support the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of Calhoun County roads year-round.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Road Construction and Maintenance

1. Construct culverts, side drains, and road layers.
2. Erect, install and maintain steel guardrails.
3. Clear brush, cut grass and maintain roads
4. Surface roads, patch potholes, perform chip seal, and fog seal work.
5. Install and maintain permanent and temporary road signs, barricades to manage traffic safely.
6. Operate and maintain road construction equipment, such as loaders, excavators, skid steers, durapatchers, backhoes and mowers.
7. Installing and repairing guardrails.
8. Scape and grade gravel roads.

Work Assignments

1. Follow Daily work assignments and collaborate with supervisors to ensure quality and meet project deadlines.

Vehicle and Equipment Reporting

1. Complete daily vehicle condition report (VCR), submit VCR prior to the start of the next day shift.
2. Report any vehicle and/or equipment mechanical concerns promptly.

Traffic Control

1. Install and maintain traffic control devices including cones, barrels, signs, and arrow boards per MUTCD requirements.
2. Setup, teardown and monitor work zones.
3. Perform traffic regulating duties and responsibilities to maintain safe work environment.

Equipment and Truck Maintenance

1. Inspect and replace all lights and bulbs and sealed beams as needed.
2. Check tires, maintain correct tire pressure, change tires and fix flats.
3. Grease the truck and change oil.
4. Maintain and replace all mud flaps.
5. Repair and replace mirrors.
6. Replace wiper blades.
7. Clean and maintain batteries.
8. Change the cutting edges on the underbody scraper and repair all loose or broken bolts and lock pins on the underbody scraper. Install, remove, and maintain the salt spreader.
9. Install and remove towing hitches.
10. Replace all snowplow shoes and blades on snowplows.
11. Check, maintain, and change the oil, fuel, air, hydraulic, and water filters.
12. Clean to ensure asphalt is removed.

Winter Maintenance Preparation

1. Assist mechanics with equipment for winter maintenance preparation, when needed.

Material Handling and Truck Operation

1. Load trucks as required.
2. Refuel trucks at the beginning and end of each shift.

Facility Upkeep

1. Maintain cleanliness of Road Department garages, yards, equipment, trucks, and parking areas.

Winter Operations

1. Salt and sand roads and bridges.
2. Plow snow from roads and bridges.

Material Transport and Distribution

1. Haul material (gravel, bituminous, etc.).
2. Dump and spread material.
3. Grade shoulders.

Tree and Debris Removal

1. Cut trees and trim brush.
2. Remove roadside trash and dead animals as directed off roads.
3. Ability to use tree removal equipment, chain saws.

Drainage and Excavation Work

1. Clean culverts.
2. Install underground culverts.
3. Dig trenches to facilitate proper drainage.
4. Perform hand-digging and hand-raking tasks.

General Duties

1. Work collaboratively with others and independently when required.
2. Drive on snow- and ice-covered roads.
3. Respond promptly to emergency road situations.
4. Attend required meetings.
5. Follow all MIOSHA and Calhoun County Road Department safety standards, policies and procedures.
6. Maintain a positive attitude and professional interaction with the public.
7. Perform Other duties as assigned by supervisors, management and senior management.
8. Electronically punches in and out for each work shift and records all job tasks using an iPad, ensuring accurate entry in the time-and-attendance system and work order system as required.

Job Qualifications

• The job requires as a minimum the completion of a standard high school diploma or equivalent. A valid Michigan Operators License, CDL, Class B with Air Brakes, and DOT Physical Card are required.
• Two years driving experience – heavy equipment and snow plowing preferred.
• Ability to work effectively with individuals and groups from a variety of identities, cultures, backgrounds, and ideologies.
• Basic computer skills for work time entry and reporting.

• Position is vital role in maintaining transportation infrastructure, contributing directly to public safety.
• Physical strength and stamina to perform strenuous manual labor and operate heavy machinery.
• Communication and teamwork skills to coordinate effectively with co-workers, and supervisors.
• Primarily, work outside in various weather conditions and may experience discomfort due to heat/cold, dust, wet and/or humid conditions.
• Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles.
• Extended workdays (beyond eight hours/day) are frequently required. Must be able to work overtime as needed.
• On-call availability to handle emergencies/crisis situations at all hours is occasionally required.

Physical Abilities

• All employees in this position will be required to work independently (unassisted) to do any or all the duties described.
• The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
• Will be required to push, pull, carry, bend, twist, stand for extended periods of time, work on equipment with arms overhead, and lift items weighing a minimum of 50 lbs.
• Prolonged standing and/or sitting while performing road maintenance.
• Tolerance for working near heavy equipment and traffic.

• The employee is also required to use hands to finger, handle, and feel and/or feet to operate objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Wage Range

$26.69—$28.89 USD
