Reporting to the Associate Director of Residential Education, this position provides case management, crisis response, and individualized support for students experiencing personal, behavioral, mental health, or other significant life challenges. The role works collaboratively with Residential Education staff, campus partners, and community resources to assess student needs, coordinate interventions, and promote a safe, supportive, and inclusive residential experience. Through proactive outreach, consultation, and student advocacy, this role helps foster student success and strengthen the overall residential community. Key Responsibilities Provide individualized case management and support for students experiencing crises or significant challenges, including mental health concerns, substance misuse, physical health issues, roommate conflicts, and other complex life circumstances. Assess student situations, determine appropriate interventions, coordinate referrals, and develop follow‑up plans that connect students with campus and community resources. Collaborate with campus partners, behavioral intervention teams, and community agencies to coordinate care, monitor student progress, and support successful outcomes. Maintain accurate case records, track trends and outcomes, and prepare reports and assessments that inform departmental planning and student support initiatives. Lead outreach efforts and communication with students, families, and campus stakeholders while ensuring compliance with FERPA and other applicable regulations. Develop and deliver training programs, resources, and best practices for student leaders and professional staff related to crisis response, referrals, student care, and community well‑being. Support departmental initiatives and emergency response efforts by contributing to policy development, process improvement, conflict resolution strategies, and residential community support programs. Position Information Full‑time (1.0 time‑base) temporary position with an anticipated end date of February 28 2027 and a possibility of reappointment. Exempt under FLSA and not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., which may vary based on operational needs. The position is approved for partial telecommuting with onsite work in San Diego. Department Summary The Division of Student Affairs and Campus Diversity supports student success, well‑being, and belonging through a wide range of programs and services that enrich the student experience. By fostering an inclusive and welcoming campus environment, the division helps students achieve their academic, personal, and professional goals while promoting excellence, equity, diversity, and community engagement across San Diego State University. The Residential Education Office plays a key role in shaping the student experience outside the classroom by creating engaging living‑learning communities within campus housing, where students build connections, develop leadership skills, and participate in programs that support their growth and success. Education and Experience Equivalent to graduation from a four‑year college or university in a related field, supplemented by upper‑division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job‑related. Possession of the required knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through an equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required. A master’s degree in counseling, clinical psychology, social work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may substitute for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling. Key Qualifications Strong relationship‑building skills and the ability to work collaboratively with students, families, campus partners, and community organizations. A passion for supporting student success and creating meaningful opportunities for diverse student populations. Excellent communication skills, with confidence in presenting information, counseling students, and building trust in one‑on‑one and group settings. The ability to analyze situations, solve problems, and make sound decisions in complex or sensitive circumstances. Strong organizational and time‑management skills, with the ability to balance multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast‑paced environment. Initiative, resourcefulness, and the ability to work independently while contributing positively to a team environment. Experience gathering, evaluating, and interpreting information to develop recommendations and support student success. Professionalism, discretion, and sound judgment when handling confidential, urgent, or high‑impact student matters. A commitment to inclusive student services, cultural awareness, and creating a welcoming environment for all students. The ability to adapt quickly, learn new programs and policies, and contribute to the continuous improvement of student support services.
