Chief of Pediatric Urology
West Virginia University Medical Corporation dba University Health Associates
Additional Job Description:
Chief of Pediatric UrologyA Leadership Opportunity to Build, Transform, and Define the Future of Pediatric Urologic Care/A System Built for the Future of Pediatric Urology
Across the United States, the future of pediatric urologic care will be defined by leaders who can integrate clinical excellence, academic innovation, and meaningful access to care. WVU Medicine is uniquely positioned to lead that future-and we are seeking a visionary physician to serve as our next Chief of Pediatric Urology. This role is designed for a physician leader who is driven not only by clinical excellence, but by the opportunity to build a program that advances access, elevates outcomes, and delivers meaningful impact for children and families across a multi-state region.
As Chief, you will lead the strategic development and clinical integration of Pediatric Urology services across the WVU Medicine network. You will partner closely with institutional leadership to expand subspecialty capabilities, optimize care delivery models, and further integrate pediatric urologic services within a multidisciplinary framework. This includes alignment with pediatric surgery, nephrology, oncology, and broader women's and children's services-ensuring comprehensive, coordinated care for complex conditions.
This is a role for a builder and a leader-someone who thrives in an environment where growth, innovation, and collaboration are not just encouraged, but expected. You will play a central role in recruiting and mentoring faculty, expanding the clinical footprint, and supporting the development of APP teams to enhance access and continuity of care. With strong institutional support and a clear vision for growth, the Chief will help define what pediatric urologic care looks like for the future of WVU Medicine.
As the state's largest health system and the academic medical enterprise of West Virginia University, WVU Medicine has built a platform designed not only to deliver exceptional care today, but to transform how pediatric subspecialty care is delivered across an entire region.
This is more than a leadership role-it is an opportunity to build, expand, and define the future of pediatric urology across Appalachia and beyond.
Qualifications & Leadership Attributes
- MD or DO degree (or foreign equivalent) with eligibility for an unrestricted state medical license
- Completion of an ACGME accredited Urology residency and fellowship training in Pediatric Urology; must be board-certified or board-eligible
- All clinical and credentialing requirements met prior to appointment
- Demonstrated commitment to delivering exceptional, compassionate, and family-centered pediatric care
- Proven ability to lead within a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment, fostering alignment across physicians, APPs, and clinical staff
- Experience building or expanding clinical programs, with a focus on access, growth, and sustainability
- Track record of advancing clinical quality, patient outcomes, and safety initiatives
- Ability to balance strategic vision with clinical excellence, serving as both a leader and practicing physician
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage, inspire, and develop teams
- Commitment to academic advancement, education, and/or research, consistent with WVU Medicine's academic mission
/Meet the Chair
Over the past year, Steven Campbell, MD, PhD, has brought transformational leadership to WVU Medicine's Department of Urology. Since joining the institution, he has significantly strengthened and expanded subspecialty divisions, while more than doubling the Advanced Practice Provider (APP) workforce-enhancing access, supporting physician teams, and advancing the system's ability to deliver high-quality, specialized urologic care across the region.
Prior to WVU Medicine, Dr. Campbell built a distinguished career at the Cleveland Clinic, where he served as a board-certified urologist, Vice Chair of Urology, Residency Program Director, and Professor of Surgery. Over a 20-year tenure, he led the largest urology residency training program in the United States and played a central role in the Urologic Oncology Fellowship Program.
Dr. Campbell's clinical and academic interests focus on renal cell carcinoma, bladder cancer, prostate cancer, and surgical education. He is a nationally recognized expert in the field, having authored more than 400 peer-reviewed publications and serving as lead author of the American Urological Association Guidelines for the Management of Kidney Cancer. During his time at Cleveland Clinic, he also contributed to the renal cell carcinoma medical genetics program, treating thousands of patients with complex genitourinary malignancies.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Campbell held leadership roles across several leading institutions, including co-director of Urologic Oncology at Loyola University Medical Center, Chief of Urology at the Hines Veterans Affairs Hospital in Maywood, Illinois, and co-director of the Division of Urological Oncology at Northwestern University.
He completed his urology residency at Cleveland Clinic, followed by a fellowship in Urologic Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Campbell earned his MD, PhD in biochemistry and molecular biology, and undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago.
/A Leadership Role with System-Wide Impact
Under the leadership of Dr. Steven Campbell, MD, PhD, Chair of Urology, WVU Medicine is advancing a unified academic vision that bridges tertiary care, community integration, and subspecialty growth.
The Chief of Pediatric Urology will serve as the clinical, academic, and strategic leader for pediatric urologic services across the health system-anchored by J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital and the WVU Medicine Golisano Children's Hospital.
This leader will have the opportunity to:
- Build and expand a premier pediatric urology program
- Define clinical strategy and programmatic growth
- Recruit, mentor, and develop faculty and trainees
- Advance surgical innovation, outcomes research, and education
- Strengthen integration between pediatric and adult urology services
/Where Leadership Meets Purpose
At WVU Medicine, leadership extends far beyond departmental oversight. The Chief of Pediatric Urology will influence how care is delivered across an entire region where access to pediatric subspecialty care is often limited.
In Appalachia, the work you lead will:
- Reduce barriers to care for children and families
- Improve lifelong health trajectories
- Strengthen clinical pathways across a multi-state system
- Advance health equity in underserved populations
/Living and Thriving Across the WVU Medicine Footprint
Where Purpose, Practice, and Lifestyle Converge
A career with the WVU Medicine-the state's largest health system and largest private employer-offers more than a professional opportunity; it provides a platform to practice at scale while living in a region defined by access, affordability, and quality of life.
As the academic health system of West Virginia University, WVU Medicine continues to expand its clinical reach and subspecialty depth across key service lines including urology, cancer, heart and vascular, neuroscience, and women's health. The system is home to West Virginia's only multi-organ transplant center and a state-of-the-art, 150-bed Children's Hospital-reflecting a sustained commitment to advancing complex, high-acuity care close to home.
Today, WVU Medicine encompasses more than 3,400 licensed beds, 4,600 providers, and nearly 35,000 employees across a growing network of hospitals and care sites spanning West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ohio, and Virginia. Anchored by an 880-bed academic medical center in Morgantown, the system is uniquely positioned to deliver both academic innovation and community-based care at scale.
At J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital-the system's flagship academic campus-physicians benefit from a robust clinical infrastructure designed to support advanced surgical care and multidisciplinary collaboration. This includes more than 40 operating rooms, a comprehensive robotic surgery program (8 Xi, 1 SP, and 1 DV5 platforms), extensive ancillary services, and direct integration with the WVU Cancer Institute.
Beyond the clinical environment, the WVU Medicine footprint offers a lifestyle that is increasingly rare in modern medicine: the ability to practice at a high level while enjoying a meaningful quality of life. Morgantown and the surrounding region provide access to top-ranked schools, vibrant university culture, and a growing food and arts scene-all set against the natural backdrop of the Appalachian Mountains.
Across the broader region, physicians and their families experience a diverse range of communities-from energetic college towns to quiet, scenic landscapes-offering flexibility in how and where you choose to live. Outdoor recreation is woven into everyday life, with opportunities for hiking, boating, skiing, and exploration just minutes from home.
At WVU Medicine, the value proposition extends beyond compensation. It is about practicing within a system that is investing in its future-while enabling you to build a life that is equally fulfilling outside of medicine.
Here, your impact reaches further. And your life feels fuller.
/Build the Future of Pediatric Urology with WVU Medicine
The future of pediatric urologic care will be shaped by leaders who are ready to think bigger-who see opportunity where others see barriers, and who are driven to create lasting change.
At WVU Medicine, we are building that future.
We invite you to explore how your leadership can define the next era of Pediatric Urology-advancing care, expanding access, and transforming outcomes for children and families across Appalachia.
At WVU Medicine, the future of pediatric urology isn't just being imagined-it's being led.
