Speech Language Pathologist Assistant

Under the supervision of an assigned supervisor and the direction of a certificated speech language pathologist, assist staff in supplementing, enhancing, and extending speech-language pathology services for pupils with speech and language disorders including articulation/phonology, fluency, voice, expressive and receptive language, language processing, verbal and written language, auditory comprehension, cognition communication, augmentative/alternative communication, pragmatic language, and hearing disorders; assist in providing training and use of augmentative and alternative communication.

The SLPA follows treatment plans or protocols developed by a certificated speech language pathologist.

Accept technical guidance from certificated speech therapy staff and classroom teacher.

Provide students with therapeutic treatments and assistance.

Coordinate with teacher, psychologist, parents/guardians, and other health care professionals.

Comply with reimbursement requirements.

Maintain detailed records and documentation of students' progress.

Assist certificated staff members with related tasks required in program planning, implementation and assessment regarding assigned children.

Implement individualized programs developed by supervising therapist or certificated staff members.

Assist assigned students with school achievement challenges resulting of speech, language, and/or hearing disorders.

Accompany students going from one location to another.

Observe and instruct behavior of students according to approved procedures; report progress regarding student performance and behavior.

Perform a variety of clerical duties such as creating and duplicating instructional materials; maintain student records and files as directed by a certificated speech language pathologist.

Attend various meetings with professionals, parents/guardians, and various services providers.

Assist with supervision of students in the classroom, on school grounds and in the community.

Maintain equipment and supplies.

Maintain confidentiality and comply with governmental laws and regulations, as well as District policies and procedures.

Assure the safety of students by following health protocols and safety rules.

Perform other related duties as requested by the supervisor.

Child development principles and practices related to children with special education needs.

Safe practices in classroom and playground activities.

Techniques and methods of effective speech, language, and hearing therapeutic treatments.

Principles and practices of current assessment and treatment approaches to speech-language disorder.

Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.

Operation of standard office and classroom equipment.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills to foster positive relationships with students, staff, and community.

Basic computer skills including email and district applications.

Basic techniques for record keeping and measuring student progress.

Monitor, observe and report student behavior and progress according to approved policies and procedures.

Accurate data collection and reporting.

Accept direction and implement feedback.

Communicate professionally and clearly both verbally and in writing.

Work cooperatively with diverse staff, students, and community.

Follow verbal and written instructions with minimal supervision and use good judgment.

Organize and prioritize work to meet schedules and timelines within established policies and guidelines.

Operate a variety of office equipment, such as a computer, copier, two-way radio, or other equipment unique to office activities.

Possess a valid speech language pathology assistant certificate of registration which includes completion of an approved course of academic study and field work under the supervision of an ASHA-certified and/or licensed SLP and on-the-job training specific to SLPA responsibilities and workplace behaviors.

The academic course of study must include or be equivalent to an associate's degree in an SLPA program or a bachelor's degree in a speech-language pathology or communication disorders program and successful completion of a minimum of one hundred (100) hours of supervised field work experience or its clinical experience equivalent and demonstration of competency in the skills required of an SLP.

Fingerprint clearance from the Department of Justice.

The SLPA will work with a certificated speech language pathologist who holds a Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech Language Pathology from ASHA and/or a state licensure (where applicable).
