Degreed Nutritionist - WIC Program - Full Time/Days - REQ#

Antelope Valley Medical Center

Job Objective The Degreed Nutritionist is responsible for providing counseling and nutrition education for high-risk WIC Participants. The Degreed Nutritionist performs enrollments, re-certifications, mid-certifications, trimester checks, prescribes and issues food benefits for WIC participants. Essential Duties and Responsibilities A. Conducts nutrition assessment for WIC participants Evaluates height, weight, and lab values from medical form. Evaluates nutrition screening questions in WIC WISE. Evaluates and prioritizes nutrition risks. Consults with the Registered Dietitian to develop a care plan. B. Nutrition education Provides nutrition counseling on WIC WISE generated risks or participant choice. Includes breastfeeding encouragement and support education for all pregnant participants. Uses motivational interviewing techniques and involves participant in counseling. Counseling is focused and time spent is appropriate. Appropriate pamphlets and referrals are given. Facilitate/conduct group education classes. Attend Agency meetings to keep current on participant education topics which includes driving to alternate clinics. C. Documentation Enters all data, labs, height/weight, and demographic information into WIC WISE correctly. Enters note in the Care Plan for all enrollments, recertification’s, single trimester, and mid-certification checks. The note entered in the Care Plan is related to the WIC WISE generated nutrition risk and the appropriate follow up plan is indicated when necessary. All pregnant participants have a breastfeeding support/encouragement note in the Breastfeeding Support and Notes screen. Education contacts are documented on the Nutrition Education Documentation screen for each participant. Appropriate HOLDS/Alerts are placed for request for blood test, immunization record, medical forms, address, and income verification. Ensure all appropriate documents are signed by the participant. D. WIC WISE competency Complete enrollments, recertification’s, mid-certifications, trimester checks, and Disqualifications according to WIC Program guidelines. Prescribe the correct food package for the participant. Make the correct appointment in the correct clinic for the participant. Enter all data into WIC WISE correctly. Non-Essential Duties Update nutrition education boards in clinics. Over-see outreach events as needed. Rotate/cover WIC clinics depending on staffing. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge Excellent knowledge of the California WIC Program policies and procedures. Excellent customer service skills. Excellent command of the English Language. Skills Ability to speak in public. Perform duties in a timely manner. Perform all duties of a WIC Clerk at an exceptional level. Abilities Ability to maintain composure under stressful situations. Ability to empathize with participants of the WIC Program. Ability to multi-task. Ability to operate a motor vehicle. Core Competencies: All AVMC employees will effectively demonstrate these behaviors: Accountability Action Oriented Customer Focused Compassion Effective Communication Teamwork Ethics & Values Integrity & Trust Education and Experience Education BS or Master’s Degree in Food Nutrition Dietetics or related field and Must meet the education requirements stated in the California WIC Program Manual (WPM 130-50). Experience 1 year of experience working in a community nutrition program preferred. Required Licensure and/or Certifications California driver’s license and current car insurance. BS Degreed Nutritionist must complete 50 continuing education units every 5 years. MS Degreed Nutritionist must complete 75 continuing education units every 5 years. AVMC Conduct/Compliance Expectations Ability to adhere with AVMC Leaves of Absence Policy. Ability to adhere with AVMC Paid Time Off (PTO) Policy. Ability to adhere with AVMC Recording of Hours Worked Policy. Ability to adhere to the department dress code. Ability to organize work and establish priorities. Ability to expand on own initiative in performance of duties. Skill and ability to follow the telephone etiquette/standards. Conforms to AVMC Standards of Excellence. Ability to function effectively under pressure and meet time parameters. Ability to communicate effectively while maintaining good working relationships with co-workers, managers and other hospital staff. Ability to adhere to the normal standards of courtesy and conduct as defined under the rules of hospitality at AVMC. Ability to maintain the confidentiality of patient, hospital and department information Ability to adhere to safety rules and regulations. Safely and effectively uses all equipment necessary to carry out duties. Ability to interpret and function under hospital and department policies and procedures. Conforms with required and appropriate Joint Commission requirements. Conforms with and supports hospital quality assurance and improvement guidelines. Ability to participate effectively in department and hospital staff education. Display a willingness to work as a team player. Ability to give and support the highest level of patient/customer satisfaction at all times. Supports and adheres to the values and mission statement established by the AVMC Board of Directors. Ability to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of Corporate Compliance rules and regulations, complies with duty to report behavior standard, demonstrates understanding of purpose for Corporate Compliance hotline and importance of seeking guidance from a supervisor when in doubt regarding a possible corporate compliance issue. Key Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Must be able to stand and walk for most of the day. Must be able to function in a noisy crowded environment. Must be able to lift and carry 15 pounds for short distances. Must be able to work schedule required by the needs of the Program.
