POSITION DESCRIPTION

Metrics for Management seeks an experienced, proactive, detail-oriented Director of Finance and Operations to join our team. This is a full-time hybrid position, with the expectation to work in the Baltimore office at least twice a week in coordination with the Executive Director.

Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Director of Finance and Operations serves as the organization's second senior leader and strategic thought partner. This role provides the financial discipline, operational infrastructure, and organizational leadership needed to support Metrics for Management's next phase of growth.

The ideal candidate combines strong nonprofit financial management expertise with the mindset of a builder. They are equally comfortable overseeing monthly financial operations, partnering with leadership on long-term organizational strategy, improving internal systems, and rolling up their sleeves to solve day-to-day operational challenges.

As the organization grows, this leader will help shape the future Operations function by building systems, developing staff, and creating the infrastructure that enables the organization to scale.. The role initially supervises a small team of consultants, with the opportunity to build and lead a larger Operations team over time.

RESPONSIBILITIES

As a senior organizational leader, the Director of Finance and Operations is expected to thrive in a dynamic, growing environment. While the responsibilities below represent the core scope of the role today, this leader will be comfortable with ambiguity, adaptable to changing priorities, and willing to step into new challenges as organizational needs evolve.

Financial Leadership & Organizational Planning

• Develop multi-year financial scenarios and organizational sustainability plans.
• Lead annual budget development and maintain ongoing organizational and project-level financial forecasting.
• Forecast monthly cash flow needs and maintain real-time visibility into staffing costs and organizational capacity.
• Translate financial data into actionable insights that support project leaders and organizational decision-making.
• Evaluate the financial implications of new funding opportunities, partnerships, and organizational initiatives.
• Present financial performance and forecasts to the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and Finance Committee.
• Serve as a strategic thought partner to the Executive Director on organizational growth, operational planning, and long-term sustainability.

Financial Operations & Grant Management

• Oversee the external accounting team and monthly financial reconciliations.
• Manage the annual audit and tax process.
• Serve as lead financial manager for a complex, multi-source grant portfolio.
• Lead proposal budget development for new funding applications.
• Manage grant budget tracking, burn rate monitoring, and project forecasting.
• Support staff in understanding and managing project budgets and financial performance.

Operations, Risk & Organizational Infrastructure

• Design and implement internal control systems and organizational policies that strengthen operational effectiveness.
• Conduct periodic risk assessments across finance, operations, human resources, and compliance.
• Oversee all consultant, vendor, and partner contracts.
• Support the selection and management of external vendors and service providers.
• Maintain and optimize organizational systems, leveraging technology and AI-enabled tools to improve efficiency, strengthen operations, and support organizational growth.
• Ensure appropriate data security and financial controls across all organizational platforms.
• Identify opportunities to improve operational systems, processes, and organizational efficiencies that support the organization's continued growth.

People Operations & Organizational Leadership

• Lead payroll and benefits administration processes.
• Ensure federal and state employment law compliance.
• Manage HR onboarding, offboarding, and personnel records.
• Manage EOR provider relationships for internationally based staff and consultants.
• Supervise consultants and future operations staff while fostering a collaborative, accountable, and solutions-oriented team culture.
• Help build the operational infrastructure and systems needed to support Metrics for Management's next phase of organizational growth.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

• 7+ years of progressively responsible finance and operations experience, including at least 4–5 years in a nonprofit organization, preferably in a small or growing organization.
• Strong nonprofit financial management experience, including budgeting, cash flow management, grant accounting, financial reporting, and audit coordination.
• Advanced proficiency with QuickBooks Online (or a comparable accounting system).
• Demonstrated success building and managing organizational and project budgets, including forecasting, expenditure tracking, and financial analysis to support decision-making.
• Experience designing and improving financial controls, operational systems, and organizational processes that strengthen efficiency and reduce risk.
• Experience overseeing operational functions such as human resources, contracts, vendor management, and organizational compliance.
• Experience managing staff, consultants, or external vendors, with a collaborative, hands-on leadership style.
• Exceptional organizational, problem-solving, and project management skills, with the ability to anticipate needs, prioritize competing demands, and thrive in a small, fast-paced organization.
• Must be authorized to work in the US for more than 18 months without visa sponsorship.
• Candidates must be based within the greater Baltimore-Washington metro area, and be available for up to 10% domestic or international travel.

Preferred

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Nonprofit Management, or a related field
• Experience supporting a remote team across different U.S. states
• A track record of implementing organizational processes in a growing organization
• Demonstrated ability to leverage technology and AI to improve operational efficiency
• Familiarity with human resources management and productivity software platforms such as Rippling, Trello, and Google Drive
• French, Spanish, or Portuguese language skills a plus given global program context

COMPENSATION

Annual salary of $120,000-$130,000 based on experience. Eligibility for performance-based compensation.

Metrics for Management also offers a competitive benefits package including health, vision, and dental insurance, travel insurance, 401(k) with employer match, and professional development funds. In addition, employees accrue up to 3 weeks of vacation each year. We also offer 9 holidays plus one floating holiday, as well as sick days, and an end-of-year closure.
