Assistant Professor of Materials Engineering – Department of Manufacturing Systems Engineering and Management (Faculty Hire #26-08) Position Overview The Department of Manufacturing Systems Engineering and Management at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) seeks a tenure‑track faculty member in Materials Engineering, rank Assistant Professor. The incumbent will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in materials engineering and conduct research in materials engineering and manufacturing. Key Responsibilities Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in materials engineering. Maintain a research program focused on materials engineering and manufacturing. Provide weekly office hours and participate in faculty meetings and departmental service. Engage in student mentorship and assessment of learning outcomes. Collaborate with department, college, and university to promote equitable educational outcomes. Required Qualifications Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, or closely related field. Teaching experience at the college or university level, in‑person or online, in areas such as materials characterization, mechanical behavior of materials, non‑destructive evaluation, MEMS fabrication fundamentals, composite materials, corrosion, thin‑film technology, failure analysis, phase transformations, nanomaterials, nanotechnology. Evidence of an active research program in materials engineering (conferences, peer‑reviewed publications, external funding proposals). Experience with materials characterization equipment and laboratory equipment (FESEM/SEM, EDAX/EBSD, EDS, XRD, AFM, microscopy). Experience advising, mentoring, supervising undergraduate and graduate students. Preferred Qualifications Knowledge of the MSEM department and desire to contribute industrial or practical experience to the Materials Engineering master’s program. Experience teaching or researching in manufacturing and related fields. Independent teaching experience in any required areas. Experience with student recruitment and program growth. Experience managing resources, supervising research assistants or lab technicians. Industrial or practical experience in materials engineering. Experience with assessment processes and accreditation systems (e.g., ABET). Strong communication skills. Experience engaging and supporting a diverse student body. Experience in culturally responsive pedagogy for equitable outcomes. Experience creating student‑centered learning environments. Research/lab experience with students from diverse backgrounds.
