Assistant Controller

A growing, privately held commercial real estate investment and management company is seeking an Assistant Controller to join its expanding accounting and finance team in Charleston, SC.

Reporting directly to the Controller, this newly created position will play a key role in strengthening accounting processes, improving internal controls, and supporting financial reporting across a complex, multi-entity organization.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain the general ledger across multiple entities, ensuring accurate and reliable financial reporting.
• Execute month-end and year-end close activities, including journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
• Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports in accordance with GAAP.
• Manage intercompany reconciliations, expense reimbursements, and multi-entity cost allocations.
• Coordinate payroll accounting, including journal entries, reconciliations, and reporting.
• Track and reconcile commission payments and other accounting transactions.
• Assist with external audits, tax filings, and compliance with internal policies and reporting standards.
• Develop and document standard operating procedures (SOPs) to improve consistency and strengthen internal controls.
• Identify opportunities to streamline workflows, improve efficiency, and reduce manual processes.
• Partner with property management, leasing, development, and operations teams to support accurate financial reporting.

Qualifications

• Active CPA license or actively pursuing CPA preferred
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• 5+ years of progressive accounting experience.
• Commercial real estate, property management, or property accounting experience
• Strong knowledge of GAAP, the full accounting cycle, and internal controls.
• Experience with month-end close, general ledger maintenance, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
• Demonstrated experience working across multiple entities.

Preferred Experience

• Multi-entity cost allocations and intercompany accounting.
• Yardi or other property accounting/ERP systems.
• Process improvement, SOP development, or accounting automation.
• Audit preparation or payroll accounting.
