To provide hospital departments with sterile instruments and trays. Direct and coordinate sterile processing department staff in accordance with departmental policies and procedures. Perform sterile processing duties: process and sterilize equipment/instruments, following recommendations of AAMI and ASHCSP. Demonstrate knowledge of equipment/instruments being processed for various nursing units. Disassemble and clean all equipment using approved disinfectants and detergents. Account for equipment and supplies used. Complete instrument sets accurately using quality control pick/reference sheets. Document all work completed for sterilization in the log book. Perform weekly assignments including cleaning and restocking. Remove any inoperable equipment or instruments and transfer to appropriate holding area for pick-up. Prepare reusable equipment for redistribution as needed. Assist in the coordination of patient care. Collaborate with other hospital team members. Participate in performance improvement activities. Perform clinical preceptor role for technicians. Maintain and clean equipment. Assume a leadership role. Effectively problem solve. Serve as a role model. Support staff in a "shift charge" role. Support customer services. Support clinical areas and leadership of those areas. Assist in planning and implementation of unit goals. Maintain open communication. Encourage cost effectiveness. Maintain productivity. Perform other job duties and responsibilities as required. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment. Ability to communicate clearly and maintain effective working relationships. Knowledge of organizational policies and procedures regarding decontamination of instruments and sterilization. Ability to monitor quality control throughout the department. Skill in identifying problems and recommending solutions. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks quickly in a fast-paced environment. Requires a full range of body motion, including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Occasionally lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires working under stressful conditions and/or working irregular hours. Potential exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, body fluids, and other conditions common to a hospital environment.
