Posting Summary


Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Postdoctoral Associate within Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at the Rutgers Cancer Institute.

The Rutgers Cancer Institute is seeking a Postdoctoral Associate to join the Department of Pediatrics and Pathology. The Laboratory focuses on elucidating the functional genomics, molecular biology, and tumor immunology underlying rare hematological neoplasms and aberrant cell signaling. Utilizing multi-omics, mouse models (GEMMs/PDXs), and human biospecimens, the incumbent will conduct independent research to uncover novel therapeutic targets in collaboration with local and international partners. The Postdoctoral Associate will design, execute, and interpret computational analyses for large-scale genomic, transcriptomic, and epigenomic datasets (bulk, single-cell, and spatial). Primary responsibilities include developing sequencing pipelines, maintaining project databases, designing validation experiments, and drafting manuscripts and grant proposals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

• Conducts computational experiments and analyses to understand the molecular pathogenesis and immune microenvironment of cancers.
• Develops computational frameworks for coupling functional genomics techniques with computational analyses to understand the molecular pathogenesis of neoplastic hematopoiesis, the immunological microenvironment, and other hematological and solid neoplasms. Such models incorporate multi-omics high-throughput assays such as RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, ATAC-seq, MPRA, PC-HiC.
• Participates in the configuration and maintenance of laboratory instrumentation and equipment, including computers and servers, necessary for conduct of the project.
• Designs and helps execute validation experiments using current methods in molecular and cell biology.
• Prepares scientific manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals and generates written progress reports on research findings.
• Prepares grant proposals based on the research conducted.
• Presents oral and/or poster presentations of the research at local, national, and international academic meetings.
• Assists with instructing and training students, more junior fellows, lower-level professionals, and technicians in laboratory techniques, instrumentation, etc., to develop the skills necessary to perform required functions.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience

• Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Statistics, Physics, Biomedical Sciences, or a related quantitative field or an M.D./Ph.D. / M.D. with a strong computational background.
• Consideration to interview will also be given to applicants who are in the process of completing the required PhD, MD, or PhD/MD degree. Documentation of the required PhD, MD, or PhD/MD degree completion must be provided prior to commencement of employment.

Certifications/Licenses

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Demonstrated research productivity and experience analyzing large-scale biological or genomic datasets. Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in scientific computing (e.g., R, Python, Linux/Unix environment).
• Excellent analytical, written, and verbal communication skills; must be proficient in spoken and written English.
• The ability to work both independently and collaboratively is essential.
• Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
• Must possess a strong foundation in cancer biology, statistics, and programming, alongside hands-on experience in variant calling and molecular data analysis.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with advanced sequencing pipelines, variant calling workflows, or high-throughput assays (e.g., bulk/single-cell RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, ChIP-seq, spatial multi-omics).
• Strong background in cancer biology, cancer immunology, or hematological malignancies.
• Experience in configuring, building, and maintaining database architectures or custom computational tools.

Equipment Utilized

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Standing, sitting, walking, talking and hearing. No special vision requirements. Lifting up to 25 lbs.
• WORK ENVIRONMENT: This position will be primarily in a computer based/dry lab environment. However, there is some wet lab work as well. Laboratory work environment, with moderate noise. Exposure to biological specimens (cells, blood, tissues etc.) with possible exposure to infectious diseases, exposure to hazardous chemicals including therapeutic drugs. Laboratory environment operates under mandatory universal safety precaution.
