Role Description The Part-Time News Reporter – Jersey Shore (Monmouth or Ocean County) will cover local government meetings, with a focus on city council and related public forums. This is a part-time, on- and off-site role based in Monmouth or Ocean County, involving regular attendance at meetings, hearings, and community events to gather accurate information. Day-to-day responsibilities include researching local issues, conducting interviews with officials and community members, and producing timely news stories that explain complex topics in clear language. The reporter will draft and refine news articles, press summaries, and other written content for the OpGov.News platform, ensuring factual accuracy and adherence to editorial standards. The role also involves collaborating with editors, monitoring public records and agendas, and identifying emerging issues relevant to residents in the coverage area. Qualifications Strong reporting and journalism skills, including the ability to gather information, verify facts, and cover public meetings objectively. Proficiency in news writing and writing for digital platforms, with the ability to produce clear, concise, and engaging stories on deadline. Experience preparing press releases or public-facing summaries that translate complex government actions into accessible language. Knowledge of local government processes or public policy is beneficial, along with an interest in civic engagement and transparency. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Comfort attending evening or weekend meetings as needed, with reliable transportation to on-site locations. Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Political Science, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience preferred. Student interns are encouraged to apply as well. Coverage Area The reporter will primarily cover communities along the Jersey Shore, including local governments, law enforcement, courts, redevelopment, public safety, and other issues affecting residents in Monmouth County.
