Certified Surgical Technologist - Labor and Delivery

The Certified Surgical Technician with Labor & Delivery experience is responsible for assisting in patient care during delivery room procedures under the supervision of nursing and surgical staff. This role involves preparing and maintaining sterile fields, handling surgical instruments, supporting surgeons during operations, and ensuring adherence to aseptic techniques and safety protocols. The technician must demonstrate knowledge of surgical procedures, equipment care, and emergency response to provide optimal patient care in a fast-paced labor and delivery environment. Responsibilities:

• Assist in delivery room patient care under supervision according to AWHONN Practice Standards.
• Apply knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology to support surgical procedures.
• Identify medications and solutions by name, dosage, and expiration date in collaboration with registered nurses.
• Establish and maintain sterile fields, including gowning, gloving, and surgical scrubbing.
• Assist with skin preparation, patient draping, and care of sterile/unsterile supplies.
• Prepare and maintain surgical instruments and equipment, including checking sutures and supplies.
• Clean and sterilize instruments and equipment following safety protocols.
• Demonstrate knowledge of surgical procedures and instrument use, performing counts of sharps, sponges, and instruments.
• Anticipate surgeon needs to expedite procedures and minimize patient exposure to surgical and anesthetic stress.
• Respond calmly and effectively to emergency situations using established procedures.
• Adhere to infection control policies, standard precautions, and delivery room procedures.

• Certification as a Surgical Technician.
• Experience in Labor & Delivery surgical support.
• Knowledge of aseptic techniques and sterile field maintenance.
• Ability to identify medications and solutions accurately.
• Strong understanding of surgical instruments, equipment care, and sterilization methods.
• Ability to perform instrument and sponge counts accurately.
• Competence in responding to surgical emergencies.

• Experience working in a fast-paced labor and delivery or women's health setting.
• Familiarity with AWHONN Practice Standards.
• Additional certifications related to surgical technology or obstetrics.

• Must adhere strictly to infection control and standard precautions policies.
• Work involves exposure to surgical and anesthetic environments requiring vigilance and safety compliance.
• Must be able to respond efficiently and calmly to emergency situations in the delivery room.

• Day shift schedule as assigned in the labor and delivery unit.
• Shift patterns determined by department needs, may require flexibility.
