Construction Controller

Position Overview The Construction Controller will be responsible for managing the company’s day-to-day accounting functions and providing financial oversight across our construction operations. This is a hands-on, highly organized position ideal for an experienced construction accounting professional who understands job costing, work-in-progress reporting, cash-flow management, construction financing, and the financial requirements of a growing custom home builder. The successful candidate will work closely with ownership, project management, subcontractors, banking partners, CPAs, insurance providers, and other key stakeholders. Key Responsibilities Manage the monthly accounting close and preparation of financial statements and management reports. Maintain the company’s QuickBooks general ledger and ensure accurate account reconciliations. Maintain accurate and timely accounting records and financial documentation. Monitor and maintain appropriate internal financial controls and approval processes. Construction Accounting & Job Costing Oversee construction job costing and project financial reporting. Maintain accurate Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and reporting. Monitor project budgets, costs, commitments, and financial performance. Work closely with project management to identify and resolve accounting or cost-related discrepancies. Cash Flow & Banking Monitor the company’s daily cash position and prepare cash-flow forecasts. Manage banking relationships and coordinate directly with banking staff. Prepare and coordinate construction loan draws, including supporting documentation and lender requirements. Post and reconcile bank deposits. Coordinate with banks, lenders, and financial institutions as needed. Accounts Payable & Subcontractor Compliance Oversee accounts payable processes and ensure timely and accurate payments. Maintain appropriate subcontractor documentation and compliance records. Coordinate collection and maintenance of required insurance certificates, W-9s, lien-related documentation, and other compliance requirements. Payroll & Compliance Oversee payroll processing and reconcile payroll records through Paychex. Coordinate with CPAs and other professional advisors regarding tax filings and financial matters. Support licensing requirements, insurance audits, lender reporting, and other regulatory or financial compliance activities. Cross-Functional Support Serve as a key financial resource to ownership and operations. Coordinate with CPAs, auditors, banks, lenders, insurance providers, and other external partners. Manage multiple priorities and deadlines while maintaining a high level of accuracy and confidentiality. Qualifications 4+ years of accounting experience, preferably in the construction industry. 4+ years of construction accounting experience strongly preferred. Strong working knowledge of QuickBooks and Microsoft Excel. Experience with construction job costing and WIP reporting. Experience preparing and coordinating construction loan draws. Strong understanding of cash-flow management and forecasting. Experience with Buildertrend preferred. Familiarity with Florida construction accounting, lien requirements, and construction-related taxes. Experience with Paychex or similar payroll systems preferred. Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently, prioritize effectively, and manage multiple deadlines. High level of accuracy, accountability, discretion, and attention to detail.
