Manager of Software Engineering

Role Description

The Manager, Software Engineering is a hands-on technical leader responsible for building, modernizing, and operating software solutions for HealthEquity’s COBRA platform, a mission-critical legacy system in a regulated domain.

• Lead a blended team of onshore and offshore engineers.
• Own technical execution and delivery outcomes.
• Work in close partnership with Product, Architecture, Security, and Operations.
• Accountable for platform stability and long-term technical modernization strategy.
• Use Agentic AI to align with engineering productivity and modernization goals.

This role is critical to maintaining platform stability, meeting regulatory obligations, and executing a responsible modernization strategy.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including hands-on work in complex or legacy systems.
• 2+ years in a technical leadership role (Engineering Manager, Tech Lead, Principal Engineer, or Staff Engineer).
• Demonstrated ability to lead teams while remaining technically credible and engaged.
• Experience working effectively with globally distributed and offshore delivery teams.

Requirements

• Remain hands-on with system design, architecture, code reviews, and complex problem solving across the application stack.
• Lead the technical modernization of the COBRA platform.
• Define, sequence, and execute a pragmatic modernization roadmap.
• Ensure engineering practices meet HealthEquity standards for code quality, security, performance, test automation, and maintainability.
• Oversee the design and governance of data warehouse solutions.
• Lead the evaluation, optimization, and modernization of SSIS/SSRS/ETL jobs.
• Embed Agentic AI into software development and support workflows.
• Set expectations that AI is a force multiplier for disciplined engineers.
• Lead, coach, and develop a hybrid onshore and offshore engineering team.
• Own sprint execution, capacity planning, and throughput.
• Maintain shared accountability for production stability, availability, and performance of COBRA platform.
• Participate in incident response, root cause analysis, and post-incident reviews.
• Partner closely with Product and Business stakeholders.
• Communicate progress, risks, tradeoffs, and outcomes clearly to leadership and stakeholders.

Salary Range

$127,000.00 To $165,500.00 / year
