Job Description
Sign Expo is seeking an experienced Director of Shop Operations to lead all fabrication, production, and installation functions across the company. This is a senior operational leadership role overseeing a team of 5–6 fabricators and installers, with full responsibility for quality of craftsmanship, production efficiency, and installation excellence. The Director of Shop Operations ensures jobs move smoothly from production through delivery and installation, sets and enforces quality and safety standards, and drives ongoing innovation in fabrication and installation technique and strategy.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on operational leader with deep signage fabrication and installation expertise, strong people-management skills, and the organizational discipline to keep a busy shop floor running efficiently under tight deadlines.
Job Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Management
- Manage the time, schedules, and daily assignments of installers and fabricators
- Supervise and support a team of 5–6 production and installation staff, providing guidance, coaching, and accountability
- Supervise all major installations, including going on-site with the team to advise on installation strategy and get the team started
- Oversee technicians on site surveys, ensuring proper scheduling and staffing ("casting") for each job
Production & Workflow Management
- Control the flow of jobs across the production floor and into delivery and/or installation
- Manage workflow and deadlines using ClickUp project management software, in close partnership with the project management and design teams
- Prioritize jobs according to client need and deadline to keep the fabrication floor running efficiently
- Ensure timely fabrication of all jobs, proactively identifying and resolving bottlenecks
Quality Control & Standards
- Inspect all jobs as production is completed to ensure optimal quality control before delivery or installation
- Establish clear, documented processes for site surveys and installations, including measurement accuracy, field documentation, and installation records
- Drive innovation in fabrication and installation technique, materials, and technical strategy
Site Surveys & Field Oversight
- Conduct high-needs site surveys personally to assess fabrication and installation strategy in complex or high-stakes situations
- Ensure site survey documentation is accurate, consistent, and usable by the design and production teams
Materials & Logistics
- Ensure the shop is stocked with all necessary materials for upcoming fabrication jobs
- Oversee packaging, shipping, and pickup output, ensuring Sign Expo products are packaged in a way that reflects well on the company (proper packing lists, labeling, and presentation)
Skills and Qualifications
- Minimum 7 years of experience in sign fabrication, production, and/or installation, including experience supervising or leading a team
- Proven track record managing a production floor and coordinating multiple simultaneous jobs under deadline pressure
- Strong hands-on knowledge of sign fabrication methods and materials (vinyl, illuminated signs, dimensional letters, metal and substrate fabrication, etc.)
- Experience overseeing complex or high-profile installations, including field supervision
- Comfort conducting technical site surveys and translating field conditions into fabrication/installation plans
- Familiarity with project management software (ClickUp or similar) for workflow and deadline tracking
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to set and enforce process, documentation, and quality standards
- Working knowledge of shop safety practices and applicable safety regulations
- Ability to read architectural drawings and technical specifications
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to coordinate effectively across production, design, project management, and clients as needed
- Valid driver's license is a plus
- Ability to lift, move materials, and be physically present on a production floor and at job sites as needed
