Job Summary Full Time, 40 Hours, Main Campus Be part of our amazing leadership team at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. BWH is consistently ranked among the top hospitals in the nation for Neurology and Neurosurgery. According to U.S. News & World Report’s 2024‑2025 rankings, BWH ranked #16 nationally in Neurology & Neurosurgery. Oversee approximately 20‑bed neurosciences ICU including both neurology and neurosurgery service lines, and a float pool. Essential Functions Evaluate and supervise staff based on mutually agreed‑upon goals in job descriptions. Implement strategies to enhance retention and reduce turnover. Promote a safe and positive working environment. Ensure that the RN supervisors/clinical care managers are aware of any updated policies and procedures. Prepare departmental budget and operate the department within budgetary guidelines. Assign patients for day‑to‑day management to nursing coordinators and/or Nursing Supervisors/Managers. I. Scholarship Creates an environment that supports and celebrates the professional growth of nursing practice. Actively supports the development of new nursing knowledge. Ensures adherence to evidence‑informed practice/standards for nursing care. Supports practice environment that encourages reflective practice, e.g., through the use of narratives, and meets the needs of the relevant patient population. Professional development Participates in self‑performance appraisal process continuously. Seeks feedback from professional colleagues. Shares strengths and areas for development with the associate chief nurse and other colleagues as appropriate. Maintains necessary clinical and managerial expertise through evidence‑based practice. Participates in service‑ and department‑wide developmental initiatives. Demonstrates commitment to lifelong learning, e.g., through active participation in professional organizations. Conduct timely assessments of staff learning needs and ensure programs/projects are in place to address them, including collaboration with the Professional Development Managers and the Center for Nursing Excellence. Facilitates opportunities for staff to precept and teach others. II. Authentic Leadership Serves as a clinical leader/coach/mentor to staff. Promotes staff participation in annual goal setting for his/her patient care area(s) and the Department of Nursing. Serves as a leader within the community of nursing, adhering to the ANA Code of Ethics. Ensures appropriate personnel to meet the needs of the designated patient population. Designs and implements staffing patterns responsive to a dynamic care environment. Interviews, hires and oversees the orientation of new employees, considering departmental, divisional, local and individual employee needs. Provides ongoing formal and informal feedback regarding performance to staff members. Delegates authority and/or responsibility to others as appropriate while maintaining 24x7 accountability. Demonstrates consistent leadership in maintaining a fair and just culture. Ensures staff participation in local‑based decision making, Department of Nursing committees and initiatives. III. Meaningful Recognition Provides formal and informal opportunities for staff to develop personal career goals and plans for achievement. Provides ongoing formal and informal feedback regarding professional development to staff members. Encourages and recommends staff participation in unit‑based decision making, Department of Nursing committees and organizational initiatives. IV. Relationship Based Care Creates a caring, therapeutic, healing, patient‑ and family‑centered care environment. Ensures presence of interventions to promote a patient and family centered healing environment. Ensures appropriate staffing plan to meet patient care needs continuously. Promotes an inclusive environment supportive of patient‑ and family‑centered care for a diverse community. V. Outcome Focused Measures Leads the clinical discipline with a commitment to excellence in nursing care and positive patient outcomes. Accounts for contributions to planning, implementing and evaluating the Department of Nursing Quality Plan, including nurse‑sensitive indicators and patient satisfaction metrics. Participates actively in Brigham and Women’s Hospital quality improvement programs, ensuring clear articulation of the quality agenda by all staff. Develops local‑based quality agenda using performance improvement methodologies in collaboration with department and hospital‑based quality leaders. Translates quality improvement findings into daily operations and strategic planning for the clinical area. Communicates and translates outcomes to staff and interdisciplinary colleagues, encouraging active participation in addressing quality improvement opportunities. Leads the development of quality‑driven and cost‑effective plans to deliver patient care, including participation in strategic planning. Ensures all staff members comply with regulatory standards, such as required licensure, orientation, ongoing education and annual competencies. Collaborates in creating systems to monitor the patient care environment, mindful of regulatory compliance. Contributes to nursing as a department/discipline, seeking and providing peer consultation and collaboration. Collaborates with HR and other departments to retain and recruit staff. Provides liaison support for staff within the larger nursing and BWH communities. Manages patient flow in collaboration with other patient care areas and the Patient Access Department. Maintains open communication with managers of Support Services and other Department of Nursing resources to assure clean and safe patient care environments. Collaborates across clinical and operational areas outside Radiation Oncology to ensure effective coordination of resources and communication. VII. Fiscal Responsiveness Seeks necessary information to establish trends for determining appropriate personnel and supply budgets. Manages the budget and articulates variances. Collaborates in creating annual operating and capital budget submissions, including proposals for new initiatives that enhance clinical services. Works with Associate Chief Nurse/Senior Nursing Director and Radiation Oncology leadership to be fiscally responsive, managing volume and acuity to hours per workload index (HPWI). Develops schedules/ staffing plans that meet patient care needs continuously. Ensures adequate supplies and operational resources for staff caring for patients. Supervisory Responsibilities Responsible for supervising Nurse Managers, RNs, LPNs, and clinical support personnel as assigned through dotted line matrixed structures. Accountability Reports directly to the BWH Associate Chief Nurse/Senior Nurse Director with dual reporting to Senior Director of Clinical Operations (Radiation Oncology). Maintains close operational partnership with MGBCI administrative and clinical leadership while maintaining employment at Brigham and Women’s Hospital department of nursing. Working Conditions Works in a variety of patient care environments where there may be exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials such as chemotherapeutic agents, blood, radioisotopes, and radiation. Work entails walking and lifting. Qualifications Current registration/licensure in nursing in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. MSN (or) DNP (or) PhD, (or) a BSN with Master’s degree in a related field, required. Current certification required or to be attained within two years from date of hire. Minimum of 3-5 years nurse management preferred. Experience with neurology, neuroscience, neuro ICU preferred. Demonstrated evidence of exemplary nursing practice. Clinical experience evaluated on an individual basis by the hiring associate chief nurse. Recent experience as a nurse leader responsible for collaboration in a highly matrixed leadership structure helpful. Strong partnership and collaboration with current Nurse Director of Ambulatory Specialties and Nurse Director of Nurse Practitioners. Must have demonstrated clinical competence in nursing practice. Must possess analytical abilities necessary to organize, supervise and evaluate the work of others. Must possess interpersonal skills to provide effective leadership to staff, and to interact with patients, visitors, physicians, other clinical disciplines, and a variety of hospital departments. Must possess both management and leadership skills to be effective with multiple levels of staff.
