About the Opportunity
A large, multi-entity organization is seeking an experienced Payroll Manager to lead payroll operations and ensure accurate, compliant, and timely payroll processing. This individual will oversee a payroll team, manage payroll-related compliance activities, support audits, and partner with Human Resources, Finance, and Information Technology teams to optimize payroll processes and systems.
This role offers a hybrid work arrangement with occasional onsite attendance in the Knoxville area.


Position Responsibilities

• Manage and oversee payroll operations to ensure accurate and timely processing of employee pay.
• Ensure payroll transactions, including wages, taxes, garnishments, and deductions, are processed correctly.
• Review and approve manual payroll adjustments and off-cycle payrolls.
• Lead year-end payroll activities, including W-2 reconciliation, reporting, and submissions.
• Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local payroll regulations.
• Support internal and external audits by providing required documentation and payroll records.
• Monitor payroll controls and maintain related process documentation.
• Partner with HR, Finance, and IT teams on payroll system enhancements and process improvements.
• Analyze payroll data and reporting to identify trends, discrepancies, and opportunities for increased efficiency.
• Develop and maintain payroll policies and procedures.
• Manage relationships with payroll vendors and service providers.
• Lead, coach, and develop payroll team members.
• Oversee departmental workflow, staffing priorities, and budget management.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives to increase payroll accuracy and operational effectiveness.

Required Qualifications

Education

• Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

Experience

• Minimum of six (6) years of professional experience in payroll, finance, accounting, or a related function.
• Minimum of three (3) years of leadership or supervisory experience.
• Demonstrated experience managing complex payroll operations.
• Strong understanding of payroll taxes, garnishments, compliance requirements, and year-end payroll processing.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with UKG, Kronos, UKG Pro, Ultipro, or similar payroll/timekeeping systems.
• Experience supporting large employee populations and multi-state payroll operations.
• Experience in healthcare or other highly regulated industries.
• Exposure to payroll audits, reconciliations, and process improvement initiatives.
