Pima County’s Conservation Lands & Resources Department is seeking a highly motivated and hard-working individual to fill a position as a Trades Maintenance Specialist II. The position works for the Special Projects Team within the Range, Agriculture, Wells and Special Projects division. In this role, you will support maintenance, construction, and restoration projects on thirteen ranch properties, seven flagship mountain and regional parks, and numerous other natural resource parks and conservation areas on 250,000 acres of eastern Pima County. Essential Functions: As defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, this classification may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. Work assignments may vary depending on the department’s need and will be communicated to the applicant or incumbent by the supervisor. Performs operational and preventive maintenance on complex facilities, equipment, and systems, including ecological or natural resource areas; Executes critical repairs to systems and equipment to maintain functionality, ensuring compliance with relevant standards, permits, and regulations; Acts as a technical expert in the maintenance and modification of complex equipment and systems, including natural resource management; Interprets and applies relevant codes, standards, blueprints, schematics, and diagrams to facilitate work processes; Prepares working sketches, drawings, and resource estimates for assigned projects and modifications; Operates specialized equipment to support various activities within the organization; Recommends improvements to equipment, facilities, and systems to enhance operability, reliability, and compliance with standards; Acts as a work center shift supervisor in the absence of the Trades Maintenance Supervisor (TM Supervisor); Inspects and approves work performed by maintenance staff, ensuring quality and adherence to standards; Coordinates equipment modifications and maintenance with facility managers and operations staff to minimize service disruptions; Maintains security and confidentiality of sensitive equipment, materials, and end-products, particularly in law enforcement or correctional settings; Participates in the development of Requests for Proposals (RFPs) and contracts for equipment, supplies, and services; Monitors contractor/vendor performance to ensure compliance with contract provisions for equipment, supplies, and services; Provides or coordinates specialized training for maintenance staff on supported systems and equipment; Maintains comprehensive records of work performed, equipment modifications, and operational logs, and prepares periodic or special reports for management. Minimum Qualifications: Four years of journey-level experience in welding, fence installation, heavy equipment operation, ranch/range work, plumbing, carpentry, and/or concrete pouring and finishing. OR: Two years of experience with Pima County in a Trades Maintenance Specialist I or closely-related position as determined by the department head at the time of recruitment. (Relevant experience and/or education from an accredited college or university may be substituted.) Qualifying education and experience must be clearly documented in the "Education" and "Work Experience" sections of the application. Ensure the descriptions provided illustrate your competencies, specifically addressing the required and preferred qualifications.): Minimum three (3) years of journey level or higher experience in ranch, natural area, conservation area, and/or open space infrastructure maintenance and construction, including experience in three or more of the following areas: road (grading) and trail maintenance (asphalt, concrete, DG and earthen); installation of cattle guards and gates; construction and maintenance of livestock fencing, gates, and vehicle barriers (post/cable, bollards); repair of wells, pumps, and pipelines; building construction, maintenance and demolition; construction of erosion control features; and/or control of invasive species. Minimum two (2) years of experience with the loading, securing, transport, and field use of heavy equipment, UTVs/ATVs, and a variety of trailers. Minimum two (2) years of journey-level experience in three or more of the following skills: welding, installation of commercial or range fencing, concrete forming, carpentry, plumbing, painting, landscaping, vegetation management, and irrigation, excavation and grading, heavy equipment operation, adobe repair, and construction. Minimum three (3) years of experience communicating and working as a team member and leader, ability to communicate with and foster productive relationships with a variety of professional and technical county staff in range, restoration, parks and trails, wells and water systems, cultural resources, conservation science, and environmental education. Minimum three (3) years of experience working with ranchers, recreational users, diverse public, and local, state, and federal agency staff in field and office settings. Minimum three (3) years of experience with e-mail, preparation of reports in Microsoft Word, and use of Microsoft Excel to create spreadsheets, as well as one (1) year of experience using GPS for navigation/orientation and GIS to create project maps. Selection Procedure: Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum qualifications. Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications may be further evaluated/scored against any advertised Preferred Qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a referral list provided by Human Resources. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process. Supplemental Information: Licenses and Certificates: Valid driver license is required at time of application. Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant’s suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures. Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination. Any offer of employment resulting from this recruitment is contingent upon Fleet Services’ review and approval of the candidate’s driving record. Some positions require a valid Arizona commercial driver license (CDL) with appropriate endorsement(s) at the time of appointment, or prior to completion of an initial/promotional probation period. Positions requiring a CDL are also subject to applicable State of Arizona and federal standards, rules, and regulations on physical requirements including drug and alcohol testing. Some positions require Arizona certification as an herbicide/pesticide applicator or backflow device inspector/repair person or installer, etc. at the time of appointment or prior to completion of an initial/promotional probation period. Failure to obtain/maintain the required licensure shall be grounds for termination. Special Notice Items: The County requires pre-employment background checks. Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history. A prior criminal conviction will not automatically disqualify a candidate from employment with the County. Some positions may require satisfactory completion of a personal background investigation by the court or law enforcement agencies, due to the need for access to County Attorney and Court facilities, records, and communication systems. Some positions carry the risk of exposure to infectious diseases, blood-borne pathogens, asbestos, or wastewater products, therefore special medical screening prior to or during employment may be necessary to assure employee health and safety. Physical/Sensory Requirements: Some positions require the ability to: lift and carry up to seventy-five pounds; safely operate assigned vehicles and other powered equipment; work in extremes of heat, humidity, dust, cold; safely wear required safety clothing/equipment; work with on in the presence of obnoxious odors; work with noxious or potentially hazardous chemicals, compounds or products; ascend and descend ladders and stairs to reach and work upon elevated or below-grade work platforms and job sites; differentiate between colors.
