High School Boys' Assistant Swimming Coach Position Purpose To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for individual and team success. The coach must also model behaviors that promote socially acceptable character development, self‑discipline, self‑confidence, and pride of accomplishment in student athletes. The coach should continue to upgrade knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, consultation, etc. Essential Job Functions Participates in budgeting with the athletic director by establishing requirements for the next season. Recommends equipment guidelines regarding type, style, color, or technical specifications. Operates within budget appropriations and is accountable for all equipment. Collects the cost of any equipment lost or not returned. Arranges for issuance, storage, and reconditioning of equipment, and submits annual inventory and records. Properly marks and identifies all equipment before issuing or storing. Monitors equipment rooms and coaches' offices, authorizes access and requisitions. Ensures athletes are in authorized areas of the building at appropriate times. Examines locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking cleanliness, and maintains specific sport equipment. Secures all doors, lights, windows and locks before leaving if custodians are not on duty. Instills respect for equipment and school property, its care and proper use. Organizes parents, coaches, players and guests for preseason meetings. Promotes the sport within the school through recruiting athletes not in another sports program and promotes outside the school via news media, little league programs, or other means. Prepares oral or written releases to local media. Maintains public relations with news media, booster club, parents, officials, volunteers and fans. Presents information to media concerning schedules, tournaments and results. Staff Responsibilities Establishes the fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques to be taught by staff. Designs conferences, clinics and staff meetings to ensure staff awareness of the overall program. Trains and informs staff, encouraging professional growth through clinic attendance as per local policy. Delegates duties, supervises implementation, analyses staff effectiveness, and evaluates assistants at season's end. Maintains discipline, addresses grievances and works to increase morale and cooperation. Performs other duties assigned by the athletic director/principal. Administrative Responsibilities Assists the athletic director with scheduling, transportation, and requirements for tournaments and special sport events. Prepares for scheduled sport events or practices and adheres to facility times, coordinating with maintenance and school employees. Provides documentation to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent and eligibility. Ensures proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites. Advises the athletic director and recommends policy, method or procedural changes. Student Responsibilities Serves as a mentor to each athlete, promoting trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. Gives constant attention to a student athlete's grades and conduct. Provides assistance, guidance and safeguards for each participant during practices, games, and travel. Provides training rules and regulations to each athlete. Initiates programs and policies concerning injuries, medical attention and emergencies. Completes paperwork on all disabling athletic injuries on proper forms and submits to athletic office within 24 hours. Directs student managers, assistants and statisticians. Determines discipline, delineates procedures, enforces due process, and contracts parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible. Assists athletes in college or advanced educational selection. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Thorough knowledge of all athletic policies. Knowledge of existing system, state and league regulations; implements them consistently and interprets them for staff. Ability to organize and supervise a total sports program. Substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport, while continually examining new theories and procedures. Ability to serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes through instruction and action.
