JV Boys Head Basketball Coach
Position Specifics
The JV Basketball Head Coach is responsible for building various aspects of the Boys Basketball Program, such as recruiting, training, and coaching team members. The JV Head Basketball Coach must abide by NEPSAC regulations and the rules set by Darrow School’s Board of Trustees, Head of School, Senior Administrative Team, and Director of Athletics.
This is a part-time position that runs from the start of the school year and ends after the basketball season has concluded.
Position is estimated to average ten to twelve hours per week, and be paid as a 1099 contractor, a payment of $3000 through mutually agreed payment frequency terms.
Key Responsibilities:
Plan and lead engaging practices focused on skill-building, teamwork, and sportsmanship
Teach sport rules, fundamentals, and strategies appropriate for middle school and/or upper school athletes
Create a safe, structured, and motivating environment for all players
Manage team logistics including game lineups and basic equipment oversight
Communicate regularly with players, families, and the Athletics Department
Supervise students during all team activities and ensure proper conduct
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree preferred
2-4 years of experience coaching basketball at the high school level is preferred
Must possess effective coaching techniques and skills
Must possess knowledge of the rules, regulations, strategies, and techniques of the sport
Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators, governing organizations (NEPSAC), opponents, officials, staff, parents, and students
Additional Knowledge/Desirable Skills:
Comprehensive knowledge of the game is paramount, in addition to extensive knowledge of current coaching techniques
Knowledge of NEPSAC rules and regulations.
Demonstrated ability to instruct and supervise student-athletes
Must possess excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
Exceptional organizational, administrative, and leadership skills
Willingness to drive one of the school vehicles to and from athletic events.
Must take pride in all the little details that help young men be successful in life and school
Must possess the ability to relate to students and to teach them on and off the court
Must be willing to accept a high level of accountability
Must possess the ability to assess players and coaches effectively
Should be a progressive thinker, but a believer in planning and preparation
Must possess a valid driver’s license; ability to drive the school’s vehicles (training will be provided)
Commitment to the 24 hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week life of a boarding school
An educational philosophy consistent with the mission of the school
Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear
The employee is required to sit, stand, walk, use hands to find, handle, or feel, and reach with hands and arms
Must be able to bend, reach, stoop, stand, and/or walk for extended periods
Must be able to lift and move objects up to 25 pounds safely and consistently
Must be able to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions, including heat, cold, sun, rain, snow, and humidity
Must be able to work in environments with adverse conditions, including dirt, dust, pollen, odors, dampness, and noise
The position requires an extensive amount of walking around campus and through buildings, climbing stairs, and driving
