The Role OpenTrain is seeking a senior legal domain expert to collaborate with research and program management teams on improving AI performance in legal work. You will help establish quality standards, design legal benchmarks, and produce instruction specifications and gold-standard solutions that define model correctness. This is a six-month initial contractor engagement based in the San Francisco Bay Area. The role is hybrid, with on-site work required multiple days per week. The work combines careful review, original legal task design, benchmark development, and close collaboration with researchers and specialists in adjacent fields. Review legal knowledge-work tasks and model outputs for missing behaviors, weak reasoning, and answers that would not withstand professional scrutiny. Write high-quality instruction specifications and produce gold-standard solutions to legal problems. Define new legal tasks based on real professional practice. Design challenging legal tasks and evaluation sets for legal-specific benchmarks and skills. Collaborate with researchers and adjacent specialists to maintain consistent standards. Translate tacit legal judgment into explicit, teachable evaluation criteria. Requirements This opportunity is intended for an experienced practicing legal professional with strong written communication and demonstrated familiarity with large language models. You should be able to evaluate whether an answer is genuinely well reasoned rather than merely convincing on the surface. Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school; a highly ranked school is strongly preferred. At least five years of substantive post-qualification legal practice at a reputable institution. Experience in a substantive practice area such as corporate and transactional law, litigation, regulatory law, intellectual property, employment, or tax. Clear progression to a senior role, such as partner, of counsel, counsel, senior associate, senior in-house counsel, or general counsel. Active admission to at least one U.S. state bar in good standing. Hands-on professional use of large language models in legal work. Excellent written communication and the ability to provide precise, well-structured feedback.
