HVAC Mechanic

Description

Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, perform skilled mechanical work in repair, inspection, servicing and alteration of District heating, ventilation, refrigeration and air conditioning systems and related equipment and facilities; assist in performing other skilled maintenance duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Any combination equivalent to: four (4) years of training or experience which demonstrates journey-level skill in the assigned trade.

• One year of experience is equal to 12 months of experience at 40 hours per week. Applicable part-time experience will be converted to the full-time equivalent for purposes of meeting the experience requirement.
• If specifically referenced (i.e. degree 'or equivalent'), related experience that is above the minimum requirement may be substituted for education on a year for year basis.
• Additional assessment is required for applicants with foreign degrees from colleges or universities outside of the United States. Applicants must have their coursework evaluated by a professional association that is a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) and must submit a copy of the evaluation with the application.

Valid California driver's license and a safe driving record.

Knowledge of:

• Manual and electrical tools and equipment applicable to HVAC trade.
• Welding and soldering techniques.
• Methods and use of test equipment.
• Health and safety regulations.
• Record keeping techniques.
• Technical aspects of field of specialty.

Ability to:

• Use a variety of tools and machines utilized in the basic trade.
• Work independently with little direction.
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Maintain records and prepare reports.
• Perform other skilled maintenance duties as assigned.

Duties

Essential duties include:

1. Service, maintain and repair HVAC equipment including heating, ventilation, compressed air, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment such as steam and hot water boilers, forced air converter units and pumps.
2. Locate and acquire parts necessary for repair or maintenance.
3. Perform electrical, pneumatic and mechanical testing of equipment.
4. Diagnose mechanical and electrical problems; repair or replace defective parts in units and equipment and controls.
5. Operate a variety of tools and power equipment including electrical, air, water, freon, and natural gas testing equipment.
6. Rebuild pressure and temperature safety valves and water pumps as necessary.
7. Perform brazing, soldering and welding as necessary.
8. Assist in performing other skilled maintenance duties as assigned.

Physical Demands and Working Environment:

This is a non-telecommuting position. Environment: Indoor and outdoor environment. Driving a vehicle to conduct work. Physical: Climbing ladders. Standing for extended periods of time. Lifting moderately heavy objects. Hearing and speaking to exchange information. Heavy physical labor. Seeing to diagnose problems and make repairs. Hazards: Working at heights.
