Lecturer - DNCE 204: Hip-Hop Dance and History (Fall 2026)

Position Overview The Dance Studies Program at California State University San Marcos seeks a part‑time lecturer for Fall 2026 to teach DNCE 204: Hip Hop History & Dance. The course meets Mondays and Wednesdays, 12:30–2:20 p.m., in person. It is a lower‑division general‑education course combining lecture, theory and lab/studio practice. Course Description DNCE 204 explores Hip Hop dance history and form, focusing on breaking, popping, locking, house and commercial Hip Hop. The course examines Hip Hop as a social movement, its influence on racial justice, and incorporates technical dance skills such as phrasing, rhythms and freestyling. It also includes professional skills such as video production and performance observation. Responsibilities Deliver lectures and lab sessions for the course. Prepare and grade assignments, quizzes, performance projects and examinations. Develop and update course materials, including syllabi and pedagogical resources. Implement culturally responsive pedagogy and create an inclusive learning environment. Mentor and advise students, particularly those from under‑represented backgrounds. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in dance, dance or performance studies, or related field; OR at least 10 years of substantial professional experience in Hip Hop performance, choreography or related industry practice and 5 years of teaching experience in Hip Hop dance (higher education, studio or community settings). Eligibility to work in California (subject to the CSU Out‑of‑State Employment Policy). Preferred Qualifications Terminal degree (MFA or PhD) in dance, dance or performance studies, or related field. Demonstrated intercultural competence and commitment to serving the campus community through teaching and, where applicable, service. Salary Salary will be commensurate with degree level and experience, within the CSU Lecturer A – AY or Lecturer B – AY range.
