Job Details Job Location: HR IDD - Burford - Chesapeake, VA 23325 Position Type: Part Time - 0-19 No Benefits Education Level: High School Diploma Obtained Salary Range: $16.00 - $18.00 Hourly Travel Percentage: Negotiable Job Shift: Evening Job Category: Developmental Disabilities Services Job Summary The Direct Support Professional (DSP) assists people who have Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities. Under supervision of the Residential Coordinator or designee, the DSP will provide direct care and support to the people living in their home, licensed or unlicensed. DSPs support people in learning skills that enable them to live with less supervision and be members of their community. DSPs support people’s safety and well‑being in accordance with Volunteers of America Chesapeake & Carolinas policies and procedures, and relevant regulations. DSPs support and communicate with people using a person‑centered approach. Responsibilities Provide necessary supports as identified by the Person‑Centered Planning Team and communicate and coordinate with families, team members, day program, and other providers as appropriate. Teach, support, and perform household tasks such as cleaning, preparing meals, planning household budgets, food shopping, etc. Assist, identify, and meet the needs of people to develop skills in daily living, following their Person‑Centered Plan consistently. Monitor medication (if required) and assist people to take medication independently. Possibly perform crisis intervention, provide emergency first aid or CPR, and other assistance. Plan, coordinate, and participate with people in social activities. Participate in assessment activities and in the Person‑Centered Planning Team as appropriate. Transport people and/or provide mobility training for appointments, grocery shopping or events. Communicate and document activities and behaviors of people in the EHR and client files as appropriate. Prepare food according to a developed menu that reflects people’s preferences and may include a prescribed diet (low sodium, pureed, low fat, etc.) and teach them healthy choices when shopping or dining out. Attend staff meetings and trainings as required by the program and ensure compliance with Volunteers of America Chesapeake & Carolinas policies, procedures and established protocols. Inspect the home, report repairs and maintenance needs, ensure fire and other safety procedures are carried out, and check for proper sanitation and security conditions. Monitor activities of visitors to the home. Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of Volunteers of America Chesapeake & Carolinas policies and procedures. Document all services in the electronic case management system daily. Work cooperatively and respectfully with the entire support team. Perform other duties as assigned. Effect on End Result Ensure the person’s needs are met and satisfaction is achieved through implementation of the Person‑Centered Plan. Ensure program operation complies with the Scope of Work, Volunteers of America Chesapeake & Carolinas policies, procedures, licensing, government regulations, and Medicaid waiver regulations. Help people live their best lives in their chosen community. Physical Requirements Safely operate a motor vehicle to transport oneself, people, and program supplies as necessary. Travel to assigned locations and perform basic and light home maintenance activities, operating office equipment. Lay out the physical ability to travel, stand, stoop, bend, reach, pull, push, lift, grasp, climb, talk, see, hear, and perform basic tasks. Operate office equipment requiring continuous or repetitive hand/arm movements. Remain in a sitting position for extended periods of time. Eligible for a bona‑fide occupational exception to ensure at least one male and one female on duty during each shift, or to honor choice and best practices. Qualifications Minimum of a high school diploma, GED, and/or IEP. 1 year of experience working in the field of intellectual/developmental disabilities (exceptions may be made for less than 1 year with enhanced supervision until a year is obtained). Medication Administration Certification is preferred and will be required by the end of the introductory period. Pass all required trainings and new‑hire orientation classes and maintain current certifications and trainings required by CMS or relevant governmental entities. Computer skills required for documentation. Clear and professional written and verbal communication skills. Problem‑solving ability.
