About Central Photo Company

Founded in Washington, DC in 1919, Central Photo Company is a fourth-generation, family-owned photography company best known for originating the panoramic group portrait.

For more than a century, we have photographed student groups, tour groups, organizations, and families at some of the country’s most recognizable landmarks. Today, our field teams work across Washington, DC and other historic destinations to create organized, technically excellent group photographs with everyone in the frame.

About the Role

The Field Operations Lead is a specialized, hands-on member of Team Capitol responsible for the precision, pace, and consistency of Central Photo Company’s field photography operation.

This person works alongside our Greeters, Groupers, Photographers, and other field crew members while taking ownership of the onsite process. They ensure each production day is properly planned, the crew and equipment are prepared, every group is arranged efficiently, each photograph meets Central’s standard, and every reservation begins and ends on time.

The Field Operations Lead determines how groups should be arranged, directs the movement and timing of production, and solves problems in real time without allowing one disruption to derail the day. They inspect photographs before groups are released and ensure the editors receive accurate photographs and reservation details. This requires strong spatial reasoning and the ability to do quick, accurate math in your head while keeping one eye on the crowd and the other on the clock.

The Field Operations Lead also improves the operation itself by identifying inefficiencies, developing better ways to arrange groups, refining procedures, protecting equipment, and making a complex live production easier for the crew to execute consistently.

This is a physical and mental working role. You will greet customers, arrange and direct groups, photograph when needed, carry equipment, solve problems, and step into whichever part of the field operation requires your attention.

The Schedule and Working Conditions

Central photographs groups on weekdays, Saturdays, and some holidays. The work may involve early mornings, long production days, and rapidly changing schedules during our busiest seasons.

Our peak seasons align with student travel in Washington, DC, primarily during the spring and fall. During these periods, this position is expected to work consistent hours and be onsite before the first scheduled group arrives through the departure of the final group.

Hours are adjusted during slower periods, but the position continues year-round. Outside peak season, the schedule includes occasional reservations and ongoing operational responsibilities such as process improvement, equipment maintenance, inventory, permits, documentation, and preparation for upcoming production periods.

The work takes place outdoors in all types of weather. We photograph in rain, cold, heat, snow, humidity, and other changing conditions. If a reservation is moving forward, the field operation is moving forward.

Punctuality is essential. Arriving on time means arriving early enough to be completely prepared before the first customer arrives. One late start can affect every group scheduled after it and everything downstream after that.

Primary Responsibilities

Lead Field Production

• Turn each day’s reservations into a clear field plan and ensure the crew and equipment are prepared before the first group.
• Lead onsite production, including group formations, crew assignments, equipment setup, timing, and transitions.
• Arrange and photograph groups as needed while keeping reservations and the full production day on schedule.
  
  

Protect Quality and Accuracy

• Own field quality control before groups are released, including photograph quality and accurate reservation details.
• Ensure photographs and reservation information are transferred accurately and completely to the Lab Crew Editors.
  
  

Maintain Operational Readiness

• Maintain and account for cameras, equipment, supplies, and inventory, coordinating repairs and replacements as needed.
• Keep permits, operational records, and recurring deadlines current.
  
  

Improve the Operation

• Work with the Head of Operations, Client Operations, and the production team to identify inefficiencies and develop, test, and implement better formations, procedures, and safeguards.
• Document successful methods so the crew can execute them consistently.

You are succeeding in this role when:

• Reservations begin and end on time, and customers feel confident and well taken care of.
• Groups are arranged efficiently, and every photograph meets Central’s standard before the group leaves.
• The crew is prepared, equipment is accounted for, and the Lab Crew Editors receive accurate, complete information.
• Preventable problems decrease as stronger operating methods are identified, documented, and adopted.
  
  

Who We’re Looking For

The ideal candidate is a capable photographer with the operating instincts of an exceptional floor manager. You are direct, observant, prepared, calm under pressure, and always thinking several steps ahead.

Strong candidates may have experience in:

• Military public affairs
• Photojournalism or visual journalism
• Live production or stage management
• Hands-on production coordination
• High-volume restaurant floor management
• Event or tour operations

Regardless of professional background, candidates must bring basic photography fundamentals and experience in fast-moving, public-facing work.

Required Qualifications

• Approximately 3–5 years of relevant experience in photography, field operations, live production, events, hospitality, tourism, logistics, military public affairs, or another high-volume environment.
• Photography fundamentals, including exposure, focus, composition, camera operation, file handling, and visual quality control.
• Experience coordinating fast-moving work involving customers, crews, equipment, and fixed timelines.
• Ability to direct large groups with confidence, clarity, and composure.
• Strong spatial reasoning and the ability to perform quick, accurate mental math when calculating row sizes and group formations.
• Exceptional attention to detail.
• Strong organization and time-management skills.
• Demonstrated punctuality and reliable attendance.
• Ability to follow established procedures while recognizing opportunities to improve them.
• Strong judgment and the ability to make practical decisions in real time.
• Clear verbal and written communication.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable access to a personal vehicle. Public transportation alone does not meet this requirement.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift and carry equipment (up to 30lbs), and remain active outdoors for extended periods.
• Ability and willingness to work outdoors in rain, cold, heat, wind, snow, humidity, and other changing conditions.
• Availability for early mornings, Saturdays, some holidays, and extended production days based on reservation volume.
• Ability to maintain a flexible schedule during Central’s spring and fall peak seasons.
  
  

Compensation

$22–$27 per hour, based on experience and demonstrated qualifications.
