Psychiatric Nurse I/II/III

Overview The Butte County Behavioral Health Psychiatric Health Facility (PHF) is seeking nurses (RN) to provide direct client care to patients receiving inpatient psychiatric treatment in our facility treating community members in psychiatric crisis. Care includes, but is not limited to, consultation with providers, participating in multidisciplinary team meetings, medication administration, managing admissions and discharges, oversight of facility functioning and providing quality documentation. Pay includes a 10% site differential and scheduling is based on applicant availability. The eligibility list created from this recruitment will be used to fill regular full-time and part-time vacancies, as well as extra help. Extra Help means this may be a Part-Time or Non-Permanent position. The number of hours worked per week may vary and depend on the needs of the department. For terms and conditions concerning Extra Help with Butte County, see Section 6.13c of the Butte County Personnel Rules. Employees assigned to the Psychiatric Health Facility (PHF) or Crisis Services will receive a 10% site differential and those assigned as part of the Rest (Resiliency Empowerment Team) will receive a 5% site differential on top of the base salaries listed below. This recruitment is for Levels I, II and III. The salary ranges are as follows: Level I $2671.20 - $3579.20 biweekly ($33.39 - $44.74 per hour); Level II $2950.40 - $3954.40 biweekly ($36.88 - $49.43 per hour); Level III $3101.60 - $4156.00 biweekly ($38.77 - $51.95 per hour). FLSA: Non-Exempt. Responsibilities Assess patients upon admission to unit and present physical and behavioral condition findings to attending physicians. May provide support to multiple nursing areas. Provide professional nursing care to patients; observe and chart vital signs and patient reactions to procedures. Administer medications and record orders to facilitate treatment; participate in the nursing component of patient treatment plans as part of an interdisciplinary team; oversee evaluation and therapeutic activities. Perform crisis intervention, manage assaultive behavior, and coordinate emergency services when a patient is in danger to self or others. Provide supportive services including individual, group or family counseling and engage in group activities as appropriate. Collaborate with medical, behavioral health and inter-agency staff; serve as case coordinator for assigned patients when needed; participate in case conferences and provide input on behavioral health cases. Manage medication refills per physician orders; communicate with pharmacies and insurers; coordinate care with primary providers, pharmacies, laboratories, schools, medical facilities, probation, social services, and other agencies. Receive and document shift reports, maintain accurate charts, and perform narcotics counts as required; organize, assign, review and evaluate staff work on scheduled shifts. Maintain prescribed standards of behavioral health treatment and ensure services comply with policy and procedural guidelines; adhere to Privacy Act confidentiality requirements. Knowledge Principles and practices of general psychiatric nursing care as defined by California licensing requirements. Functional direction and training principles; techniques for working with individuals with behavioral health challenges and their families. Medical and psychiatric terminology; first aid; psychiatric medications and their effects; standard medical recordkeeping and documentation. Community behavioral health treatment principles and methods, including interviewing, assessment and counseling; infectious disease knowledge; utilization of documentation standards and customer service. Teamwork and effective communication; English language structure and grammar; use of computers and relevant software. Abilities Conduct psychiatric assessments and report findings to medical staff. Direct and evaluate staff work and train on procedures; develop effective treatment plans. Perform crisis intervention and manage potentially violent incidents; participate in utilization review and infection control. Recognize signs of psychiatric disorders; apply clinical judgment; prepare clear reports and maintain client rights information. Interpret and apply laws, regulations, policies and procedures; represent the department in meetings with various stakeholders. Organize work independently, set priorities, meet deadlines, and interact professionally with others. Use computers and software for work tasks; communicate clearly in writing and speech; build positive working relationships. Education and Experience Equivalent to an Associate’s degree with major coursework in nursing, psychology, or related field. Psychiatric Nurse I: One year of psychiatric nursing experience. Psychiatric Nurse II: Three years of psychiatric nursing experience equivalent to Nurse I. Psychiatric Nurse III: Four years of psychiatric nursing experience equivalent to Nurse II. Certifications and Licenses Valid Registered Nursing license issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing. Valid CPR certification. A position may require a valid California Driver's License. Physical Demands Mobility to work in office or clinical settings; ability to lift up to 45 pounds with assistance; travel to clinics may be required. Vision to read and assess emergency situations; hearing and speech for communication; finger dexterity for data entry and medical equipment operation. Working Conditions Work in office, outpatient, clinic, jail, juvenile facility or locked psychiatric facility environments; moderate noise; exposure to outdoor conditions and potentially hazardous situations including crisis intervention. May be exposed to blood and body fluids; interact with upset individuals and enforce policies. Equipment and Tools Utilized Motor vehicle, medical equipment (stethoscope, BP cuffs, etc.), PPE, computer, fax, and standard office equipment.
