Medical Authorization Specialist

Department: Business Office Responsibilities Verify insurance benefits for patients. Notify patients of deductibles and co-insurance due as needed. Contact primary care physicians regarding referrals. Request referrals for services, including appointments and procedures. Regularly call insurance companies for follow-up. Explore other payment options with customers when needed. Maintain confidentiality of sensitive patient and company information. Contact patients when additional information is required. Request, track, and obtain pre-authorization from insurance carriers within the allotted time for medical services. Review patient’s medical history and insurance coverage for approval. Contact referring physicians for additional information as needed. Input new patient information and update the system. Monitor the schedule for potential issues. Complete billing documentation. Assist with clerical tasks as needed. Secure prior authorizations before services are performed. Demonstrate knowledge of medical terminology and high proficiency in general medical office procedures, including HIPAA regulations. Communicate insurance changes or trends to the team. Maintain productivity levels suitable for the department. Document all communications and contacts with providers and personnel in standardized documentation with the proper format. Ensure regular attendance. Perform other related duties as assigned or requested. Company reserves the right to add or change duties at any time. Qualifications Education: High School diploma or GED required. Experience: Minimum 2 years of workers’ compensation experience. Experience: Minimum 1 year as a medical biller/coder. Experience: Experience with electronic scheduling system and electronic medical records (EMR) required. Familiar with medical terminology. Knowledge Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, stenography and transcription, designing forms, and other office procedures and terminology. Skills Skill in identifying patient concerns and correcting or notifying supervisor. Skill in actively listening, speaking to patients, and asking questions to ensure the patient experience is at the highest level. Abilities Ability to read and write instructions, comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
