Summary

The Laboratory Assistant II performs clerical and/or technical duties of low to moderate complexity, in support of laboratory operations.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Accurately prepares specimens for distribution and analysis according to laboratory policies and procedures including research protocols.
• Demonstrates competency and assists in the competency assessment of peers according to regulatory requirements.
• Teaches, trains and/or mentors new employees, students and other healthcare professionals according to standard operating procedures.
• Reviews and edits department standard procedures and ensuring accuracy and compliance according to best practices.
• Performs plating and processing of simple and moderately complex sources using infection control practices in a biological safety cabinet according to standard operating procedures as assigned.
• Ensures patients are correctly identified through the hospital registration system, account numbers are current and correct tests are ordered; checks requisitions for data entry errors and resolves questionable orders.
• Creates new hospital encounters in electronic medical record when needed.
• Performs assigned laboratory functions in compliance with regulatory agencies, quality indicators, and infection control practices according to laboratory procedures.
• Responds to customer needs, including prompt attention to pneumatic tubes, customer and courier deliveries, phone calls and electronic communications.
• Records temperatures, provides proper notifications when values are out-of-range and performs and documents follow-actions. Operates and maintains equipment and documents maintenance performed.
• Manages inventory including ordering of supplies, reagent preparation, labeling, use and disposal.
• Performs anatomic pathology support tasks, such as slide filing/retrieval, tissue disposal, and post mortem assistance as assigned.
• Performs waived testing and quality control activities according to standard operating procedures and documents appropriately.

Preferred Qualifications

• CLIA or CAP Certified Clinical laboratory sample processing preferred
• Familiarity with EPIC preferred
• Comfort with collaborative partnerships across departments

Salary Information
Pay is dependent on applicant's relevant experience.

Hourly Range: $19.18 to $28.77
