Packaging Technical Lead (Associate Director)

Merck seeks an Associate Director of Packaging to lead the definition and execution of global packaging strategies for pharmaceutical products. This role requires designing robust packaging systems, managing technical risk assessments, ensuring regulatory compliance, and collaborating across cross-functional teams from development through commercialization.
Responsibilities
- Ensure packaging system designs are robust and control strategies integrate with upstream and downstream manufacturing needs
- Conduct technical risk assessments, develop packaging specifications, and oversee qualification activities prior to product launch
- Drive compliance with regulatory standards and sustainability goals across packaging programs
- Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders across CMC areas to balance technical, cost, and resource trade-offs
- Lead development and commercialization of new products on cross-functional teams while managing multiple concurrent projects
Requirements
- Bachelor's in Packaging Engineering, Packaging Science, or Mechanical Engineering with 10+ years pharmaceutical development experience; or Master's/PhD with 8+ years
- Demonstrated expertise in designing, developing, and testing primary and secondary pharmaceutical packaging components
- Proficiency with risk assessment tools and quality risk management methodologies
- Experience leading cross-functional teams both internally and externally on complex projects
- Hands-on experience with blow-fill-seal technologies for sterile pharmaceutical packaging systems
- Knowledge of US and global pharmaceutical regulations, ICH guidance, ISO standards, and quality systems
- Strong technical written and oral communication skills with ability to influence senior leaders
