Necropsy/Histology Technician Location: Newark, DE 19711 Duration: 12 Months (possibility of extension based on business requirements and performance) Shift Times: 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Job Description Qualifications: Bachelor of Science (Animal Sciences preferred; Biology with animal experience acceptable). Recent graduates with lab experience are acceptable. High School diploma plus 5 years experience acceptable, but a college degree is preferred. Preferred: Rat/Mouse handling experience. Medical surveillance testing not required. Exposure to common allergens: Latex, animal dander, and urine. Not required to drive or work remotely. Role Overview Start as lab support to the necropsy and histology group, transitioning to the prosector group after approximately 5‑6 months. Must be comfortable with euthanasia and necropsy functions. Job Summary Assist technical personnel with general laboratory operations and routine tasks. Maintain laboratory facilities and equipment according to standards. Follow acceptable methods and training prescribed by the work group. Essential Functions Set up, provide support during, and help clean up after necropsies. Provide necropsy and histology lab support: change solutions, print slides/cassettes, operate slide staining machine, weigh tissues, unpack specimens for shipment, etc. Euthanize laboratory animals to ensure humane treatment. Observe and record data such as weights and physical characteristics of laboratory animals in accordance with laboratory standards. Record facility and equipment measurements such as weights and temperatures per laboratory standards. Collaborate to produce histological slides for pathologist examination; may include embedding, cutting, staining, and coverslipping if workload permits. Operate, clean, and maintain facilities and equipment per standard operating procedures. Order, receive, decontaminate, store equipment and consumables; stock cabinets. Prepare reagents and solutions, and dispose of biological and chemical waste. Adhere to EPA regulations, protocols, standard operating procedures, and Good Laboratory Practices. Future Development (after 6 months) Potential evolution into a necropsy/histology technician handling routine and special rodent necropsies and histology procedures. Work one weekend in an eight‑week period if role evolves; not required if remains as lab assistant. Handle laboratory animals. Position Requirements Bachelor of Science degree.
